SDSU Beats UCSD in City Tournament

San Diego State defeated previously unbeaten UC San Diego, 15-6, 15-9, 15-11, in the title match of the San Diego city women’s volleyball championships at the M. Larry Lawrence Jewish Community Center Tuesday.

SDSU (4-0) was led by Gracy Schutt’s 13 kills and Kim Lester’s 10 digs. UCSD fell to 9-1.

To get to the championship match, SDSU defeated USD, 15-11, 15-13, 15-8, behind Angela Martin’s 23 kills and 11 digs. USD is 2-2.

In the other semifinal, UCSD defeated U.S. International, 13-15, 15-7, 15-10, 15-11, as Elizabeth Tan had 13 kills and eight blocks. USIU is 2-1.

Point Loma Nazarene (6-2) defeated host The Master’s College, 15-11, 15-12, 15-5 in a non-conference match. Jamie Wheat (10 kills) and Tracy Daniels (eight) led Point Loma. The Master’s is 0-1.

SOCCER

After opening its season with two shutouts of small schools, the unranked USD soccer team will find out just how good it is tonight at 7:30 when it plays host to No. 3 UCLA (3-0) at Torero Stadium.

USD goalie Tom Tate will have his 0.00 goals-against average challenged by one of the top forwards in the nation, senior Bill Thompson, who has scored a goal in each of the Bruins’ three victories.

USD is led offensively by junior forward Paul Gelvezon (two goals), a transfer from Mesa Community College, and freshman midfielder Toby Taitano (one goal, one assist) from Valhalla High.

The UCSD women’s soccer team, defending champion in NCAA Division III, opened its season with a 1-0 victory at San Francisco.

Sally Weigand, who went to University City High, scored the game’s lone goal off a pass from Cheryl Parker.

HOCKEY

The International Hockey League Gulls announced the signing of their 10th player, defenseman Steve Dykstra, who played for the NHL’s Hartford Whalers for part of last year.

Dykstra’s most impressive statistic is penalty minutes: 545 in just 217 NHL games.

SURFING

Christian Fletcher of San Clemente beat Hawaii’s Keoni Watson in the opening round of the $100,000 Body Glove Surf Bout III at Lower Trestles at Camp Pendleton. Round 2 begins today at 7:30 a.m.
