Fullerton

Coach: Hal Sherbeck (30th year)

1989 record: 6-4, 5-4

Returning lettermen: 29

Returning starters: Three on offense, two on defense

Top returnees: Rob Coons, TE, 6-6, 175; Eric Lange, K, 5-10, 165; Kevin Leon, P, 5-11, 205; Vince Galaz, OL, 6-3, 265; Don Norris, RB, 6-2, 205; Chuck Underwood, OL, 6-3, 260; Eric Robinson, QB, 5-11, 195; Craig Ritter, OL, 6-5, 270; Mike Rieth, OL, 6-3, 235; Ward Van Pelt, DL, 6-1, 210; Erik Neal, LB, 6-2, 235; Scott Clausen, LB, 6-1, 205.

Top newcomers: John Mountain, RB, 6-2, 215; Coy Collins, RB, 5-8, 155; Brad Nesbit, OL, 6-1, 205; Shawn Donahue, DL, 6-0, 240; Matt Shackleford, DB, 5-11, 180.

Outlook: Fullerton has solid special teams with kicker Lange and punter Leon, both returning all-conference players, but the offense has many other questions. Robinson has switched from wide receiver to quarterback, and how well he develops will play a big part in the Hornets’ early success. Coons, an all-conference tight end, is back as well. “The attitude and the desire are much better this year,” Sherbeck said.

Golden West

Coach: Ray Shackleford (25th year)

1989 record: 5-5, 5-4

Returning lettermen: 30

Returning starters: Two on offense, five on defense

Top returnees: Kevin Ashworth, LB, 6-2, 205; Jeff Robbins, LB, 6-2, 220; Keone Simon, DL, 6-2, 220; Ray Smith, DL, 6-0, 270; Jim Mansfield, DL, 6-2, 225; Eric DuPee, DL, 6-2, 235; Bobby Sylvia, DB, 5-9, 170; Greg Szuba, DB, 6-0, 180; Jason Tarbart, OL, 6-3, 250; Chris Hubbard, OL, 6-2, 250; Robert Bedford, TE, 6-2, 215; David Brunet, QB, 6-1, 165; Ron Ramirez, 6-3, 205; Frank Vaccaro, RB, 5-11, 190; Mike Graff, RB, 5-11, 225.

Top newcomers: Doug Cunningham, RB, 6-2, 220; Garner Hicks, RB, 6-0, 199; Kevin Magula, RB, 6-1, 180; Kevin Mullens, DB, 6-0, 170; Glenn Christy, OL, 6-3, 280; Matt Hunt, DL, 6-1, 230.

Outlook: Golden West coaches say the defense could be the best in the Rustlers’ history. The offense has some questions though. Shackleford isn’t going to announce the starting quarterback until next week.

“We have a lot of people with game experience on defense,” he said. “That’s always a plus. They will carry us.”

Orange Coast

Coach: Bill Workman (fifth year)

1989 record: 5-5, 4-5

Returning lettermen: 28

Returning starters: Three on offense, five on defense

Top returnees: Ernie Goddard, LB, 6-0, 220; Kevin Roberts, LB, 6-0, 214; John Kelly, LB, 6-3, 222; Chris Deuchar, LB, 6-3, 228; Demetrious Moore, DL, 6-2, 275; Tim Farnum, DL, 6-2, 237; Lawrence Hatch, DB, 6-1, 188; Mark Recktenwald, DB, 5-10, 175; Dwayne Armstrong, DB, 6-0, 190; Greg Thurston, OL, 270; Greg Angelovic, QB, 6-1, 190; Jim Warren, FB, 6-2, 228.

Top newcomers: Adrain Steen, RB, 5-5, 180; Kip Winkler, OL, 6-3, 271; Vince Legaspi, DL, 5-9, 205; Derek Whiddon, WR, 6-4, 220.

Outlook: The Pirates are deep everywhere except on the offensive line, and have impressive speed, especially on defense. Angelovic returns at quarterback and freshman Steen looks impressive at tailback. OCC returns four experienced linebackers, three of whom were starters. This should be the school’s best defense in Workman’s time.

“We don’t know what will happen on offense but the defense is ready,” Workman said. “That we are sure of.”

Rancho Santiago

Coach: Dave Ogas (ninth year)

1989 record: 10-1, 8-1

Returning lettermen: 23

Returning starters: Four on offense, four on defense

Top returnees: Estrus Crayton, RB, 6-3, 200; Brain Hunter, OL, 6-0, 220; Dirk Larson, TE, 6-2, 240; Tim Hatcher, K, 5-11, 175; Scott McMahon, DB, 6-1, 185; Scott Noble, DB/P, 6-1, 195; Ralph Henderson, DB, 5-9, 170; Dave Spoolstra, DL, 6-4, 210; John Rood, LB, 6-0, 220; Richard Valenzuela, LB, 6-1, 220.

Top newcomers: Richard Weaver, QB, 6-2, 185; Oscar Wilson, DL, 6-3, 245; George Tuioti, TE, 6-4, 250; Herb Prawl, DL, 6-1, 225; Gary Bladow, DB, 6-2, 180; Trey Frank, WR, 6-2, 185.

Outlook: With Crayton, a J.C. Grid-Wire All-American, around, things could go pretty well for the Dons. He rushed for 1,340 yards in 204 carries, scoring a school-record 20 touchdowns and a school-record 126 points. Rancho Santiago still has a four-man race for the quarterback spot and Ogas isn’t going to name a starter until next week. The defense is strong and quick, especially in the backfield, where three starters return.

Riverside

Coach: Barry Meier (11th year)

1989 record: 11-0, 9-0

Returning lettermen: 33

Returning starters: Three on offense, four on defense

Top returnees: Mark Wilson, RB, 5-8, 188; John Peoples, RB, 5-11, 190; Terry Engle, OL, 6-2, 265; Curtis Mays, OL, 6-3, 285; Kenny Deemer, LB, 6-3, 220; Steve Stokes, LB, 6-2, 220; Sam Manu, LB, 6-1, 225; Scott Elmore, DB, 5-10, 180; Ron Williams, WR, 6-2, 180.

Top newcomers: Sal Hernandez, DL, 6-3, 290; Greg Pfrunder, QB, 6-3, 205; Jack Manu, QB, 6-0, 185; Samita Vaoifi, RB, 5-10, 220; Curtis Thomas, RB, 5-8, 160; Jim Peters, LB, 6-3, 215; Danny Kile, LB, 6-3, 220; Randy Nonhof, OL, 6-6, 275; Dale Luebs, TE, 6-5, 215.

Outlook: Riverside is the defending co-national champion with Navarro, Tex., in the USA Today poll, and the Tigers also were the top-ranked team in California. Riverside is the pick to win the division, but Meier is quick to point out the lack of a returning quarterback, and only two offensive linemen are back. Still, with one of the largest areas from which to draw players, Riverside should be able to fill the holes better than most.

Saddleback

Coach: Ken Swearingen (15th year)

1989 record: 1-9, 1-8

Returning lettermen: 18

Returning starters: Three on offense, one on defense

Top returnees: Mike Cook, WR, 6-5, 180; Jeff Bailey, QB, 6-3, 235; Mark Broccardo, TE, 6-3, Dax Jordan, 5-10, 175; Toney Jenkins WR, 5-11, 175; Russ Miller, OL, 6-1, 240; Lee Hilstock, OL, 6-1, 270; Robbie Robinson, DL, 6-3, 265; Matt Hamry, LB, 6-2, 205; Michael Coe, DB, 6-0, 170.

Top newcomers: Sean Morrison OL, 6-1, 250; Damon Psaros, DL, 6-0, 215; Rick Sparks, DB, 5-10, Mike Miller, DB, 6-2, 280; 180; Mike Frederickson, DT, 6-1, 250, Bill Trainor, LB, 6-2, 240; Brian DeHuff, LB, 6-1, 220.

Outlook: Saddleback struggled to a 1-9 mark last season, allowing school records for points (260) and total yards (3,836). Swearingen has switched from offensive coordinator to defensive coordinator to try his luck with a mostly inexperienced unit. Bill Cunerty will head the offense.

“We have a lot of young players and with that you get a lot of enthusiasm,” Swearingen said. “People always ask if you are going to be as good as you were last season, and I say ‘Yep.’ ”
