Turnovers Plague San Clemente in 14-11 Loss

North Torrance High School turned two San Clemente turnovers into 14 fourth-quarter points Friday to defeat the Tritons, 14-11.

After recovering a fumbled punt, North Torrance marched 43 yards into the end zone, capped by quarterback Brian Jurado’s one-yard quarterback sneak for the touchdown.

On San Clemente’s next possession, Saxon linebacker Dano Casillas picked off San Clemente quarterback Kenny Dolan’s pass and returned it 20 yards to give the Saxons a 14-3 lead with 7 minutes 5 seconds to play.

The Tritons, who turned the ball over five times in the game, finally broke into the end zone on their next possession when fullback Shane Shanafelt scored on a five-yard sweep. Shanafelt finished the game with 84 yards in 13 carries.

On North Torrance’s next possession, Triton senior Matt Wimpress sacked Jurado in the end zone for a safety, making the score 14-11 with 2:57 to play. But the Tritons were unable to make a first down in their ensuing possession.
