ODDS AND ENDS

Booster clubs traditionally have collected funds at high school football games through 50-50 raffles or drawings for an automobile or vacation, but Troy High School’s band boosters have devised an unusual method of earning money this season.

The boosters are staging a “Guess the Weight of the Band” drawing throughout the season with the drawing scheduled for Nov. 2. Fans are being asked to guess the combined total weight of 43 band, 31 drill and 11 tall flag members.

The $1 drawing includes the weight of the band’s instruments. Student Lee Barron offered this helpful tip for those who play. “My tuba weights about 30 pounds,” he said.

ON THE RECORD

‘It’s sweet to beat one of the best programs in Orange County. I have a lot of memories from when I played there. I looked out there and saw (Mater Dei’s) red helmets with the three (white) stripes and it brought it all back to me.’

--Eric Patton, Capistrano Valley coach who played linebacker at Mater Dei in the 1960s, on getting an 18-15 victory over his alma mater.
