HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Donati, Demarest Join to Lead Bishop Diego

Junior quarterback Richie Donati and wide receiver Ricky Demarest combined for three scoring passes to lead Bishop Diego High to a 30-13 victory over Calabasas at San Marcos High Saturday night.

Bishop Diego went to its air attack quickly and often, scoring on its first offensive series on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Donati to flanker Benito Rivera.

Calabasas put together an 11-play, 78-yard scoring drive capped by quarterback Ron Adelman’s seven-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cameron LaBrache to tie the score, 7-7, early in the second quarter.

Donati then threw touchdown passes of 21 and 34 yards to Demarest in the second quarter and a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter capped the Cardinal scoring.

Donati also added a 29-yard field goal in the third quarter for Bishop Diego.

Esperanza 20, Santa Ana 7--Jarod Smith rushed for 107 yards in 14 carries and scored on a 70-yard run off a double reverse and Marcus Tayui had a 25-yard touchdown to lead the Aztecs over Santa Ana at Placentia’s Bradford Stadium.

Agoura 3, Santa Clara 0--Pat Fitzgerald’s 30-yard field goal with 56 seconds left in the first half won it for the Chargers at Oxnard High. Agoura gained 146 total yards, while holding Santa Clara to 86. Both teams combined for 177 penalty yards and eight turnovers.

St. Genevieve 20, Murphy 0--Mike Mirolla rushed for 112 yards in 11 carries to lead St. Genevieve in a nonleague opener at Birmingham High.

Mirolla scored the first and last touchdowns of the game on runs of eight and 14 yards. He also set up another score in the second quarter with a 55-yard run to Murphy’s 19-yard line. One play later, fullback Pedro Gutierrez scored from nine yards out to give St. Genevieve a 14-0 lead with 3:57 left in the first half.

Fillmore 26, Pater Noster 0--Running backs Jon Alvarado and Val Pillado combined for 165 yards and three touchdowns to lead Fillmore over host Pater Noster in a nonleague season opener for both teams at Pater Noster.

Cathedral 20, L.A. Baptist 8--Leading 14-0 in the fourth quarter, Cathedral put the game away on Gunter Donoso’s 30-yard scoring run in a nonleague game at Cathedral.

Donoso’s run capped a three-play, 90-yard drive that started when an L.A. Baptist scoring threat stalled at the Cathedral 10-yard line.

Canyon Springs 43, Victor Valley 7--Quarterback Chris Ogle scored twice to lead the Cougars, who rushed for 314 yards and six touchdowns, in defeating Victor Valley at Canyon Springs.
