Victor DeVaughn is the second-string tailback on the Cal State Northridge football team, which is a little like being the second-best dancer in the Astaire family.

Until last Saturday.

After Albert Fann, the Matadors’ All-American tailback, was sidelined with a pulled left hamstring, DeVaughn took over in the backfield during the second half against Eastern New Mexico.

So what was the difference? Not much.

Fann finished with 72 yards in 17 carries. DeVaughn had 59 yards in 14 rushes, including a 29-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown romp during which he broke three tackles. CSUN won, 24-13.

“He’s a more than adequate backup,” CSUN Coach Bob Burt said. “He’d start for a lot of people. He’s got some power and is a big back like Albert, with good quickness and good feet.”

DeVaughn played primarily on the Matadors’ special teams before last week’s game. “He’s a good back,” Burt said, “but no one ever knew it because he very seldom gets a chance to play.”
