SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : San Luis Obispo Upsets Portland State, 36-23

Senior running back Joe Fragiadakis rushed for 142 yards in 25 carries and scored a touchdown, and Tom McCook kicked a conference-record five field goals to lead Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to a 36-23 upset victory over Portland State in a Western Football Conference game at Portland.

San Luis Obispo, 3-0 overall, 1-0 in the WFC and ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division II, dealt fourth-ranked Portland State (3-1, 0-1) its first conference loss at home since 1986.

Junior quarterback David Lafferty completed 12 of 25 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns for San Luis Obispo, which never trailed.

UC Santa Barbara 31, Cal State Chico 27--The Gauchos (2-1) spotted Chico (2-2) a 21-point lead before coming back behind quarterback Mike Curtius to win the nonconference game at Goleta.

Curtius completed 24 of 49 passes for a career-high 315 yards and connected with Brian Fleming on a 14-yard scoring play with 2:14 left that gave the Gauchos the victory.

Chico had the ball at the Santa Barbara seven with two seconds left, but linebacker Mark Henigan stopped quarterback Rob Tomlinson inside the one to preserve the victory.

Tomlinson completed 33 of 48 passes for 391 yards and a touchdown.

Cal State Northridge 17, Central State (Okla.) 6--Tailback Albert Fann gained 101 yards in 28 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Matadors (2-1) at Edmond, Okla.

Northridge’s defense limited Central State (1-2) to 75 yards rushing.

Pomona-Pitzer 31, Claremont-Mudd 20--Tailback Chris Smith gained 91 yards in 20 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Sagehens (2-0) over the Stags (0-2) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Pomona.

The victory was Pomona-Pitzer’s first against Claremont-Mudd since 1985 and gave the Sagehens their first 2-0 start since 1970.

Redlands 42, Whittier 16--James Bradney gained 113 yards in 10 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 34 and 48 yards to lead the Bulldogs (3-0, 3-0) past the Poets (0-2, 0-2) in a SCIAC game at Whittier.

University of San Diego 13, La Verne 0--Dave Bergmann kicked two field goals and Brendan Murphy connected with Mike Hintze on an 18-yard pass play as the Toreros (3-0) beat the Leopards (0-2) in a nonconference game at La Verne.

St. Mary’s 34, Cal Lutheran 12--Junior quarterback Scott Wood passed for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Gaels (3-1) past the Kingsmen (0-3) in a nonconference game at Moraga.

Azusa Pacific 28, Occidental 10--Brian Hunt completed 19 of 37 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown and ran for two others as the Cougars (2-1) beat the Tigers (1-2) in a nonconference game at Eagle Rock.
