PREP CROSS-COUNTRY ROUNDUP : Sophomore Paces Tustin’s Top-Ranked Girls’ Team

Liza Alexander won the girls’ race to lead Tustin High School to a 27-30 victory over Newport Harbor in a Sea View League cross-country meet at Tustin Thursday.

Alexander, a sophomore running in her first varsity meet, finished the three-mile course in 18 minutes 33 seconds. Tustin, which is the top-ranked Southern Section Division II team, is 1-0 and Newport Harbor is 0-1.

In the boys’ race, Newport Harbor’s Mike Hancock (15:52) finished first, but Tustin won, 25-30. Paul Stamat finished second for the Tillers.

In Sea View League boys’:

Woodbridge 25, University 31--David Chia ran 15:49 to win for University at Mason Park in Irvine.

Saddleback 16, Corona del Mar 43--Eddie Salinas (15:43) won on the Back Bay course to lead Saddleback, the Southern Section Division VI’s top-ranked team. Albert Ochoa (15:59) was second and Joe Heredia (16:15) and Mario Vela (16:15) tied for third for Saddleback (1-0).

In Sea View League girls’:

Corona del Mar 15, Saddleback 50--Corona del Mar (1-0) had a six-way tie for first between Heather Taketa, Alicia Boice, Heather Bray, Sharlyn Kerr, Mollie Flint and Kristen Shryock. They all finished in 22:15 at Corona del Mar.

Woodbridge 26, University 29--Tanja Brix ran 17:32 for University but Kay Nekota of Woodbridge pushed her, finishing in 17:40 to lead the Warriors.

In Angelus League boys’:

Mater Dei 15, Servite 50--Sean James finished first in 16:23 and Damien Porter second in 16:56 at Los Coyotes Park in Fullerton to lead a Mater Dei sweep of the first six places.

Loyola 20, Santa Margarita 41--Mike Mazza won in 16:50 for visiting Santa Margarita (0-1).

In Angelus League girls’:

Mater Dei 18, Rosary 49--Diane Chonette (19:33) and Jennifer Schuller (20:16) finished first and second for Mater Dei at Los Coyotes Park in Fullerton.

In Century League boys’:

Santa Ana Valley 15, Orange 47--Peter Reyes and Juan Arvivu finished together at 15:26 to lead a sweep of the first five places for Santa Ana Valley at Centennial Park.

Canyon 24, Foothill 31--Dan Uyematsu (17:19) finished second for host Canyon.

El Modena 24, Villa Park 31--Villa Park’s Rob Fisher finished the three-mile course at Eisenhower Park in Orange in 15:45, breaking the course record of 15:52 set by Villa Park’s Kory Lynch last season.

In Century League girls’:

Orange 15, Santa Ana Valley 50--Laura Roundy ran 19:35 to win for Orange (1-1) at Centennial Park. Santa Ana Valley’s Veronica Orozco finished second (19:37), but the Falcons forfeited because they had only two girls running.

Canyon 27, Foothill 29--Laura Flatauer and Kim Nelson, both freshmen, broke the Canyon course record with a time of 18:56 to tie for first. The record was 19:56, set last year by Debbie Henderson. Megan Gillespie moved from 14th place to ninth place during the last mile to ensure Canyon’s victory. Canyon is ranked fifth in the Southern Section Division II and Foothill is No. 3 in Division III.

In Empire League boys’:

Katella 25, Los Alamitos 31--Katella’s Mike Love won in 15:40 and teammate Mike Moreno was second (15:54) to lead the Knights at Los Alamitos. Robert Kyle finished third (16:05) for Los Alamitos.

In Empire League girls’:

Los Alamitos 21, Katella 40--Martha Pinto of Katella won in 17:51, but Los Alamitos’ Tracy Fatone, Margarita Fernandez, Karen Schick and Sonya Swann all finished in 20:39 at Los Alamitos.

In Olympic League boys’:

Whittier Christian 15, Valley Christian 49--Shawn Ericson led a Whittier Christian sweep of the first five places in a double-dual meet at Penn Park in Whittier. Whittier Christian (4-0, 2-0) also defeated Brethren, 15-49.

In Olympic League girls’:

Whittier Christian 26, Valley Christian 29--Valley Christian’s Melissa Kelley won in 22:32 and Whittier Christian’s Helen Garcia was second in 23:20. Whittier Christian and Valley Christian each won, 15-50, in their dual meet against Brethren.

In Orange League boys’:

Anaheim 20, Brea-Olinda 37--Jose Felix (15:53) finished first and Oscar Malo (16:59) second to lead Anaheim at Carbon Canyon Park. Justin Curley of Brea-Olinda finished third in 17:17

Magnolia 27, Western 28--Western’s Jeff Anderson ran 16:54 to win, but Eloy Gomez (17:49) and Dennis O’Neil (17:54) finished second and third to pace visiting Magnolia.

In Orange League girls’:

Brea-Olinda 15, Anaheim 50--Dena Bloomfield of host Brea-Olinda finished first in 22:36.

In Pacific Coast League boys’:

Estancia 22, Century 34--Robert Ho was first in 16:50 for Estancia at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.

In Pacific Coast League girls’:

Estancia 25, Century 30--Carrie Appell finished first in 20:39 for Estancia.

In South Coast League boys’:

El Toro 19, Irvine 43--Dan Meader finished second in 15:57 for host Irvine.

Dana Hills 23, Mission Viejo 35--Dan Niednagel ran 15:32 to lead the Dolphins to victory at Laguna Niguel Park. Kerry Classen of Mission Viejo was second in 16:01.

San Clemente 18, Capistrano Valley 45--Josh Crocker and Enich Harris finished tied for first at 16:46 for host San Clemente (2-0).

In South Coast League girls’:

Irvine 27, El Toro 30--Jennifer Gillis finished first for host Irvine (17:42) and teammate Kelly Roda (17:53) was second.

Mission Viejo 27, Dana Hills 29--Sonja Hildebrand (18:57) and Robin Logue (19:49) finished first and second, respectively, for Mission Viejo (2-0) at Laguna Niguel Park.

San Clemente 27, Capistrano Valley 30--Terri Smythers finished first (19:07) to lead host San Clemente (1-1).

In Sunset League boys’:

Fountain Valley 19, Ocean View 48--Mark Sanchez ran the three-mile course in 16:00 for Fountain Valley (3-0), which placed five runners in the top six at Central Park. Ocean View is 1-2 in league competition.

Santa Ana 24, Marina 31--Juan Ramirez (15:46) of Santa Ana (2-0) was first and Randy Kallick (15:56) of host Marina (0-3) was second.

In Sunset League girls’:

Edison 17, Huntington Beach 43--Shelley Taylor (18:32) led host Edison (2-0). Kara Bradbury was second (19:03) and Brandy Simons third (19:24) for Edison.

Santa Ana 19, Marina 41--Carmen Payan (19:52) finished first for Santa Ana. Christy Smith was fourth for host Marina (20:56).
