COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC’s Melton Finishes Fifth in State Cross-Country Meet

Christy Melton of Orange Coast College finished fifth and teammate Mari Benavides was 10th in the women’s state cross-country championships Saturday morning at Mt. San Antonio College.

The Pirates finished fifth in the team competition. El Camino won with 77 points. Mt. San Antonio scored 89, Riverside 92, Moorpark 101 and Orange Coast 109.

Dina Fargo of West Valley won the women’s individual title, covering the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes 40 seconds. She took a 10-second lead about three quarters of a mile into the race and held it the rest of the way. Melton ran 18:04, Benavides 18:26.

There were no teams, and only two individuals, from Orange County in the men’s race. Pedro Garcia of Rancho Santiago was 37th in 21:13 for the 4.2-mile course, and Cypress’ Isaac Silva was 60th in 21:54.

Long Beach won the men’s team title with 66 points. Mt. San Antonio (71) was second, and El Camino (76) was third.
