COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Sweeps, Makes Volleyball Finals

Golden West College advanced to the finals of the California Community College women’s volleyball championships by sweeping Cerritos, 15-5, 15-8, 15-9, at Allen Hancock College Saturday.

Kysha Green had 11 kills and six blocks to lead Golden West (23-3). Tania Grasselli had nine kills and seven blocks and Stacia Allen had 31 assists for Golden West.

In the Cypress-Bill Taurmina men’s basketball tournament:

Cypress 76, L.A. City 73--Sam Sabbara scored 16 points and was named the tournament most valuable player and Eric Pauley scored 19 points and had 16 rebounds to lead Cypress (4-4) to the championship.

In the the Denny’s Miles Eaton men’s basketball tournament:

Orange Coast College 66, Mt. San Jacinto 61--Michael Wenzlaff had 18 points and Brian Spratt 14 for host OCC (6-3), which took third place. Spratt was named to the all-tournament team. Orange Coast outscored Mt. SAC, 37-29, in the second half.

In the Grossmont men’s basketball tournament:

Rancho Santiago College 96, Fullerton College 83--In the championship game, Rancho Santiago forward Erik Martin had 28 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate and tournament MVP Corie Blount had 22 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots. Glenn Greene had 18 points and Vern Broadnax had 17 for Rancho Santiago (8-1). Rancho Santiago set a school record for free throws, making 33 of 36. Greene was nine of nine and Blount was eight of eight.

Fullerton’s Garrison Hunter had 21 points and Kenny Cross had 14.

In the Cypress women’s basketball tournament:

Moorpark 67, Orange Coast 63--Amy Chandler scored 22 points to lead Moorpark (8-1) to the championship. Erika Manning and Stacey Geim each scored 18 points for Orange Coast (6-3).

Ventura 65, Cypress 54--Nicole Ellis scored 20 to lead Ventura. Heidi Sorour scored 26 points to lead Cypress (1-7) in the consolation championship.
