BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : St. Clair’s 17 Help Sonora Score an Upset of Fullerton

Chris St. Clair scored 17 points as Sonora High School upset Fullerton, 51-46, in a Freeway League boys’ basketball game Monday at Fullerton.

Sonora (4-16, 2-4) made 21 of 28 free throws. The loss dropped Fullerton (11-9, 4-2) out of a first-place tie with Sunny Hills and Buena Park.

In other Freeway League games:

Sunny Hills 66, La Habra 62--Dominic Carnesi scored 20 points and Terry Mann added 18 for host Sunny Hills (13-7, 5-1).

Buena Park 67, Troy 56--Chris Stone and Prentiss Johnson each scored 18 points for host Buena Park (13-7, 5-1). Stone scored eight points in the second quarter as Buena Park outscored Troy, 25-11, in the quarter after leading, 6-4, at the end of the first quarter.

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 80, Santiago 76--Kevin Gaughen (22 points) scored with 11 seconds left to give host Pacifica (12-6, 8-2) a 78-76 lead. Brian Hachiya stole Santiago’s inbound pass and got it to Scott Lesser (22 points), who scored as time ran out.

Kennedy 71, Bolsa Grande 54--The score was 42-42 going into the fourth quarter, but Kennedy’s Jermaine Galloway scored 12 of his game-high 29 points as the first-place Fighting Irish (12-8, 9-1) pulled away.

Rancho Alamitos 79, La Quinta 77--Chris Singletary scored 27 points for host Rancho Alamitos.

Garden Grove 86, Los Amigos 65--Joe Aguirre scored 25 points and had a school-record 18 assists for host Garden Grove (11-9, 7-3). Teammate Mark Perry added 33 points.

In Garden Grove League girls’ games:

Rancho Alamitos 78, La Quinta 57--Anita Stecker scored 17 points for host Rancho Alamitos (20-0, 10-0).

Los Amigos 51, Garden Grove 43--Carrie Elsaesser scored 14 points as visiting Los Amigos (9-9, 6-4) won its fifth in a row.

Santiago 60, Pacifica 44--Becky Elcock scored 16 points for visiting Santiago (11-8, 6-4).
