COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Mena Sparks Golden West in Victory Over Orange Coast

Brian Mena continued his hot hitting and helped Golden West win its fourth consecutive game, a 10-4 victory over Orange Coast in Orange Empire Conference baseball Friday at Golden West.

Mena, who in the past three games has nine runs batted in, had two hits and three RBIs for Golden West (9-7, 4-1). The Rustlers scored seven runs on five hits, including a two-run double by Mena, and four Orange Coast errors in the sixth inning.

Mark Dodd had a pinch-hit, three-run home run for Orange Coast (11-8-1, 1-5).

In another Orange Empire Conference baseball game:

Riverside 8, Cypress 5--Mike Alto had two hits, including a grand slam in the seventh inning, for host Riverside. Troy Babbitt had three hits including a bases-empty home run and a double, and three RBIs for Cypress (13-5, 3-2).

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Orange Coast 4, Riverside 1--Mattie Gomez had two hits, including an RBI single in a three-run inning for the host Pirates (11-8, 3-1).

Cypress 11, Fullerton 1--Nickanni Andrew had four hits for visiting Cypress (14-4, 3-0).

Golden West 3, Saddleback 2--Leann Larriva had two hits and scored the go-ahead run for Golden West (7-5, 1-3) in the fourth inning on a throwing error. Saddleback is 3-7, 1-2.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:

Saddleback 153, San Diego Mesa 87--Don Flood won the 50-yard freestyle (21.88) and the 100 free (48.37) in state championship qualifying times for host Saddleback.

Orange Coast 142, Palomar 73--Tony Harris, the defending state champion, won the 500 freestyle in 4:42.88 for the Pirates (3-0).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:

Orange Coast 184, Palomar 102--Christine Williams won the 100 free (55.40), 200 free (1:59.98) and 50 back (31.11) for the Pirates (3-0), who won their 73 consecutive dual meet.
