COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Consistent Ventura Hits 20-Win Mark

The Ventura College baseball team recorded its 20th victory Thursday, a 7-5 Western State Conference win at Bakersfield that marked the sixth consecutive season in which the Pirates have reached that plateau.

Ventura broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the eighth inning when Tim Cass doubled with one out. With Tim Cornish pinch-running, pinch-hitter Chris Bargsten smacked a two-out double that scored Cornish and gave Ventura its winning run.

For Ventura (20-9, 5-6 in conference play), Darrell McMillin was three for five and had two runs batted in, and Cass was two for three with two RBIs. Carlos Rios had two hits for Ventura.

The rally made a winner of starter Andy Moffatt (3-1).

The Master’s 9, Westmont 4--Sheldon Sparks was two for three and drove in three runs and Russ Henzie was three for six to lead Master’s in an NAIA District 3 game at home.

Sam Minyard, who pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, picked up the win and improved to 1-1. Master’s is 15-10, 8-5.

Harbor 7, Moorpark 2--Harbor used an 11-hit attack to defeat Moorpark in a nonconference game in Wilmington.

Carey Lundstrom (7-0) earned the victory and John Boardman took the loss.

“We expect to win every game, it’s just a matter of what the score is going to be,” Harbor Coach Tony Bloomfield said.

Ricardo Gutierrez scored the first run for Harbor (20-6) on a first-inning throwing error by Moorpark catcher Brandan Banaga.

The Seahawks scored three more times in the fourth. Rodney Garcia drove in a run with a single to right field and Erik Russell drove in two with a single to left to give Harbor a 4-0 lead.

Moorpark fell to 10-17.

Glendale 17, Canyons 10--Glendale and Canyons combined for 32 hits in a WSC game at Canyons.

Glendale (13-14, 5-6) scored nine runs in the fifth inning to turn a 6-3 lead into a rout. Swain Wukelich went four for five with three RBIs and Eric Sheets hit two fifth-inning home runs--including a grand slam--and had six RBIs.

Mitch Bowen (1-3) took the loss for Canyons (13-13-1, 8-3). Pat DeBoer doubled twice, singled and had two RBIs for Canyons.

Rich Detolve was the winning pitcher.

Mission 4, Golden West 3--Mission and Golden West played an unofficial game because the assigned umpires failed to show up. A spectator umpired behind the plate, and Mission players alternated as the base umpire.

Mission’s Nino Romo struck out nine and walked one in a complete game.

Cal Lutheran 7, Biola 4: The Kingsmen turned one hit and two Biola errors into four runs in the third inning of an NAIA District 3 game at Cal Lutheran.

Mike Rooney (4-3) pitched seven innings to earn the win for CLU before giving way to Mike Clark, who picked up his third save.

Bob Farber hit a solo home run in the first inning to lead a nine-hit attack for CLU (14-6, 6-2 in district play). Biola is 8-17, 5-10.
