HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Hilltop Rally Snaps Scoreless String, Beats Southwest

Hilltop High played 13 consecutive innings this week without scoring before two Lancers crossed home in the bottom of the seventh to force Friday’s Metro Conference game against Southwest into extra innings.

In the ninth, Bobby Lugo drove in Jessie Guzman with a single to right to give Hilltop a 3-2 victory.

No. 6 Hilltop (7-2-1, 2-1) was shutout Wednesday by Castle Park’s Benji Gil.

With one out in the seventh Friday, Hilltop’s Rock McGinty walked. Singles by Guzman and Richie Hinzo loaded the bases. Johnny Garibay knocked in McGinty with an infield single, and Guzman scored on a throwing error.

Sergio Guzman, Jessie’s older brother, struck out nine in the final six innings to improve to 1-0. He entered in the fourth with the bases loaded and no outs, coaxing a double play and a groundout to end the inning.

Salvador Sanchez had given the Raiders (3-5, 1-2) a lead with a towering two-run homer in the second.

Other Metro games:

Montgomery 3, Chula Vista 2--Senior Mike Wazal (4-0) threw the Aztec’s second gem of the week, a three-hitter to help No. 4 Montgomery (11-1-1, 3-0). Pedro Ramirez threw a one-hitter Wednesday. Chula Vista (5-7, 1-1) made five errors.

Castle Park 15, Bonita Vista 4--Shortstop Benji Gil had two home runs and six RBIs as Castle Park (11-3, 2-0) used a 13-run fifth inning to turn a 2-2 game into a rout. Gil, who leads the county with five homers, and Trojan catcher Kiko Palacios each went three for four. Vico Moreno (4-0) was the winner in relief. Bonita Vista fell to 1-7, 1-2.

Sweetwater 12, Mar Vista 9--The Mariners committed four errors in Sweetwater’s seven-run third inning and never recovered. Dorian Guerrero and Lorenzo Inzunza each had two hits for the Red Devils (4-5-1, 1-2). Ricky Quinones was three for three with two RBIs for Mar Vista (5-5-1, 0-3).

Nonleague

Helix 13, Morse 6--Helix took advantage of 11 hits, 13 walks and two hit batsmen, scoring four runs in three different innings. Bobby Miller went three for three with two RBIs, and Ryan Smith (3-1) pitched a four-hitter and struck out eight for the Highlanders (8-4). Chris Nelson had a bases loaded triple in the first for Morse (4-6).

Valhalla 16, San Marcos 3--No. 10 Valhalla (7-4) routed No. 9 San Marcos (6-3), scoring all 16 runs in the first four innings at home. Eric Nielson (4-1) had six strikeouts in four innings for the Norsemen. Nielson (two for three), Tavo Carrillo (two for three), Clint Parsons (two for four) and Mike Pettigrew (one for two) each drove in three runs.

SOFTBALL

Metro Conference

Chula Vista 9, Montgomery 0--Jennifer Martinez pitched a one-hitter and had 17 strikeouts for the Spartans. Teammate Allison Hines went three for three with two RBIs.
