Southern Section Boys Beat City Behind Young, 137-110

Quartz Hill High guard Chris Young had 21 points and six assists to lead the Southern Section to a 137-110 victory over the City Section on Saturday night in the San Fernando Valley Boys’ and Girls’ Club All-Star Basketball Classic at Pierce College. The win was the Southern Section’s first in four tries.

Young was chosen the Southern Section most valuable player. City Section most valuable player was Cleveland point guard Kenny Collins, who scored 16 points. Guard David Tyner of Royal had 18 points and forward Keith Halcovich of Hart added 13 for the Southern Section.

The Southern Section led, 66-58, at halftime and scored 43 points in the third quarter to extend the lead to 109-91.

In the girls’ game, Lori Church of Simi Valley High scored 20 points and staved off two late City Section rallies to help the Southern Section girls’ team to an 86-79 victory. The Southern Section girls’ team has won all four games in the series.

The City pulled within 76-71 with 3 minutes 45 seconds to play before Church, chosen as her team’s most valuable player, hit consecutive jump shots. The City clawed back to within three when guard Angela Rich connected on a 25-foot shot with 1:42 left but Church again came to the rescue, hitting two more jump shots to give the Southern Section a seven-point lead.

The City team’s most valuable player was Grant’s Monique Young, who had 17 points and nine rebounds.
