ROUNDUP : Sweep Extends Cal Lutheran’s Win Streak to 13

Cal Lutheran extended its winning streak to 13 games by sweeping a nonconference doubleheader from Pomona-Pitzer, 13-8, 9-7, Saturday at Pomona.

Cal Lutheran (25-6), which has won 17 of its past 18, had 16 hits in the opener and was led by Jay Lucas, who was three for five with two runs batted in.

In the second game, the Kingsmen took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed. Bob Farber had two hits.

In other college baseball games:

Pierce 6, Bakersfield 1--Pat Huston and Joe Cascione each hit his fifth home run to lead host Pierce to a Western State Conference victory.

Huston hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Cascione added a two-run shot in the sixth. Chris Brown (3-1), a freshman from Taft High, tossed his second consecutive three-hitter for Pierce (18-12, 11-6 in conference play).

Oxnard 6, Valley 3--Jim Weese was three for four for Valley (7-24-1, 4-14) in a WSC game at Valley. Oxnard improved to 11-6 in conference play.

Santa Barbara 17, Canyons 10--Robert Barrena went four for six, including a two-run home run, for Canyons but the Cougars (17-16-1, 12-6) lost the WSC game at Santa Barbara.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 4-3, Arizona State 3-2--The visiting Matadors (30-25) upset No. 8-ranked Arizona State (36-15) twice in a nonconference doubleheader.

Beth Calcante went two for four with a triple in the first game and two for three with a run-scoring double in the second game to lead Northridge, which split with No. 3-ranked Arizona on Friday.

Cal Lutheran 12-16, Redlands 0-0--Leslie Stevens (15-2) and Marjie Seivers (10-1) both tossed five-inning one-hitters for Cal Lutheran (23-5) in a nonleague doubleheader. Both games were shortened because of the 10-run rule. Stevens, who pitched the second game, also drove in three runs with two triples.

In the first game, Kim White and Brenda Frafjord were each two for three with two RBIs.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Crespi 9, Alemany 1--Phillip Aghajanian allowed just three singles in pitching a complete game for Crespi (12-7, 6-1) in a Mission League game at Alemany. Aghajanian, a junior right-hander, improved to 4-1. Bill Canalez and Brodie VanWagenen each drove in two runs for Crespi.

Chaminade 8, Notre Dame 6--Brian Powers, playing his third varsity game after being elevated from the junior varsity, was two for three and drove in four runs on a home run and a double for visiting Chaminade (7-11, 2-5) in a Mission League upset.

Powers’ three-run shot during a four-run fifth inning gave Chaminade a 7-6 lead.

Rio Mesa 7, Camarillo 6--Rio Mesa’s Angel Lopez scored the eventual winning run on a passed ball with the bases loaded and two out in the sixth inning of a nonleague game at Rio Mesa. Mike Mitchell hit his fifth home run, a solo shot in the second, for Rio Mesa (14-3).

Hart 10, Century 2--Shane O’Brien threw a four-hitter and drove in three runs for Hart (10-5) in the third-round game of the Santa Ana tournament.

Harvard 6, Mary Star 3--Adam Richards threw a four-hitter and also doubled for visiting Harvard in the third-place game of the L.A. Baptist tournament.
