Aztecs Facing Loyola Marymount

San Diego State, ranked fifth in the nation, will meet Loyola Marymount in the first round of the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. tournament tonight at 7:30 in the UC Irvine Bren Events Center.

The winner of the SDSU-Loyola match will play Thursday night at 7:30 against the winner of tonight’s Cal State Long Beach-UC Santa Barbara match.

SDSU (21-6, 12-4) finished third in the WIVA Harry Wilson Division behind USC (25-1, 16-0) and CSULB (26-4, 14-2). Loyola (9-13, 5-11) was fourth. SDSU’s only conference losses came against USC and CSULB.

UCLA (15-7, 12-4) won the WIVA Burt Degroot Division. The winner of today’s USC-UCLA match automatically advances to the NCAA Final Four, May 3-4, at Honolulu, Hawaii. The WIVA tournament champion also advances to the Final Four.

BASEBALL

Bill Dunckel went two for four with a triple and three runs scored and Darin McGhee went two for three with two RBIs as San Diego State defeated visiting UC San Diego, 10-4, in a nonconference game. SDSU (32-12) used six pitchers with Rick Navarro (5-4) picking up the victory. UCSD fell to 12-18.

Mike Henry scored from second on Dan McAdoo’s two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to give the University of San Diego a 3-2 victory over visiting UC Riverside in a nonconference game. The Toreros’ Tom Cheek (6-5) pitched two-shutout innings to pick up the victory. Dirk Fisher of Fallbrook High hit a two-run homer for UCR’s only runs. USD improved to 19-26-2, UCR fell to 23-20-1.

U.S. International University lost to visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills, 12-7, in a nonconference game. Dominguez Hills improved to 24-16-1. USIU fell to 12-31.

Point Loma Nazarane was shut out by Cal Baptist, 6-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game in Point Loma. Mark Ratekin had a double and a single for PLNC (15-27, 2-14). Cal Baptist (22-16, 8-8) scored all six runs in the first two innings on four hits.

GOLF

The University of San Diego remained in third after the second round of the West Coast Conference championship at Portland, Ore. The Toreros with a score of 615 trail Pepperdine (586) and San Francisco (597).

USD’s Steve Brown is sixth overall with a two-round 149.
