COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC Wins Volleyball Playoffs With Victory Over Palomar

Orange Coast defeated Palomar in three games to win the Southern California Regional men’s volleyball playoffs Friday at Orange Coast.

Lance Lyons had 19 kills, Masui Allen had 17, and Austin Linford had 11 blocks and eight kills as OCC won, 15-7, 17-15, 15-7.

OCC (20-3), two-time defending State champions, advances to the State tournament May 3-4 at Los Angeles Pierce College.

OCC had defeated El Camino, 12-15, 15-5, 13-15, 15-3, 15-9, earlier Friday. Allen had 25 kills, Lyons 24 and Linford had 14 kills and 13 blocks for OCC (20-3) in the El Camino match.

In South Coast Conference men’s swimming:

Golden West leads--Jeff Lemnitzer set a conference record in the 200-yard freestyle ( 1:42.73) for Golden West in the meet at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. Golden West’s 200 medley relay team also set a conference record at 1:36.88.

Golden West had 619 points and second-place Long Beach had 441.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:

Orange Coast leads--Paul Barrera won the 100 butterfly (51.70) and Tony Harris won the 200 freestyle (1:46.19) for Orange Coast in the conference finals at Saddleback. OCC (588) holds a comfortable lead over second-place Grossmont (420).

In South Coast Conference women’s swimming:

Golden West leads--Lisa Hadfield won the 200 individual medley (2:13.09) for Golden West in the conference meet at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:

Orange Coast leads--Kim Stanfield set a conference record in three-meter diving with 489.89 points in the meet at Saddleback. She surpassed her own mark of 486.65 set last season. OCC leads with 479 points; San Diego Mesa is in second with 334.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Cypress 10, Saddleback 0 (6 innings)--Cypress (37-10, 14-2) clinched at least a tie for the conference title. Tricia Barr had three hits including a homer in the fourth inning that set the school record for home runs in a season with six. Cindy Hover (9-0) pitched four innings, allowing two hits, striking out four and walking two for Cypress.

Golden West 3, Rancho Santiago 1--Pam Fogg pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and striking out seven for visiting Golden West (16-14, 9-7). Celeste Gordon pitched a five-hitter and did not allow an earned run for Rancho Santiago (9-18, 3-13).

In the Ojai men’s tennis tournament:

Saddleback players advance--Esteban Saba of Saddleback defeated Dennis Price of Imperial Valley, 6-0, 6-1, in a third-round match, and defeated Oliver Lee of Pasadena, 6-2, 6-0, in the round of 16 (fourth round). Scott Hansen of Saddleback defeated Fred Boring of Merced, 6-2, 6-1, in a third-round match and defeated Niza Simunyola of Canada, 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 16. Rob Habibi and Scott Habeaki of Santa Barbara defeated Max Alvaraez and Fabian Skarvad of Saddleback, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
