SOUTHERN SECTION VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS : Huntington Beach to Meet Mater Dei in First Round

Huntington Beach, Woodbridge and Edison high schools are among the top-seeded teams in the Southern Section 4-A volleyball playoffs, which begin Friday at various sites.

Second-seeded Huntington Beach (16-1) will play host to Mater Dei (8-6) in a first-round game Friday. The Oilers’ only loss was against San Marcos (13-1), the No. 1-seeded 4-A team.

Fourth-seeded Edison (12-3), runner-up to Huntington Beach in the Sunset League, will play host to Redondo Union (9-7) Friday.

Third-seeded Woodbridge (14-2), the Sea View League co-champion with Newport Harbor, will play host to Hoover (8-6) Friday.

Marina (11-5) had one of the toughest draws in the 4-A division. The Vikings, who won two major tournaments but finished third in the Sunset League, will play Friday at Laguna Beach (14-4).

Esperanza (16-0) is seeded fourth in the 3-A division. The Aztecs, the Empire League champions, will play host Friday to the winner of Wednesday’s wild-card match between Downey and California High.

Western (10-8) plays at El Dorado (7-10) Wednesday in a 3-A division wild-card game.

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel (14-2) is the top-seeded team in the 2-A division. The Eagles, the Olympic League champions, plays host to the winner of Chadwick-Long Beach Gethsemane Baptist in a first-round game Friday.

Whittier Christian (14-2), seeded second in 2-A, plays host to the winner of Crossroads-Salesian in a first-round game Friday.

Finals for all divisions are May 25 at Cerritos College.
