COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Ventura Falls to Cypress in Softball, 6-0

Ventura College managed only one hit in a 6-0 loss to host Cypress on Friday in the second round of the Southern California regional of the state softball tournament.

Seventh-seeded Ventura (25-13) needs to sweep second-seeded Cypress (41-10) today at Cypress to advance beyond the best-of-three second round to the eight-team state finals May 17-19 at Golden West College.

Cypress’ Laura Corson (25-7) struck out four and walked two. Pricsella Sarmiento had two hits, scored twice and had one run batted in for Cypress.

In another softball game:

Cal State Northridge 3-2, Pacific 1-4--Beth Calcante went five for eight with two doubles and a triple to help Cal State Northridge gain a split of a nonconference doubleheader against host Pacific (26-37-1).

Heather Lindstrom (16-10) threw a two-hitter in the first game and the Matadors (34-32) had eight hits.

Patti Pearson went two for four and Calcante went three for four with two doubles.

The Matadors, who committed three errors in the first game, took a 2-0 lead in the sixth and added a run in the seventh.

In the second game, Calcante went two for four with a run-scoring triple in the fifth inning.

CSUN’s Cami Allen (12-19) allowed three earned runs on nine hits and four walks.

It was Northridge’s last regular-season doubleheader of the season.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

NAIA District 3 women’s tournament--Cal Lutheran’s No. 1 singles player, Joey Dooley, fell in the semifinal round, 6-2, 6-1, to Andi Sisel of Westmont at Pt. Loma Nazarene College in San Diego.

Dooley was seeded fourth in singles play, Sisel was seeded first. Sisel will face fifth-seeded Heidi Olden of Westmont in the singles final today.

Westmont leads in the team standings with 18 points followed by Pt. Loma (12) and Cal Lutheran (eight).
