School: Laguna Hills High

Sport: Swimming

Events: 200-, 500-yard freestyle

Class: Junior

Carvin wasn’t satisfied with merely winning the 500-yard freestyle at the Southern Section Division 2-A swimming championships Saturday. He wanted to break the division record set in 1988 by another Chad--Chad Hundeby of Woodbridge. Carvin, who finished second in the event last year, won in 4 minutes 22.08 seconds, more than 14 seconds faster than his nearest competitor and 1 1/2 seconds faster than Hundeby’s record. Carvin repeated his victory of last year in the 200 freestyle, winning by almost three seconds, and his anchor leg of the 400 freestyle relay helped his team to another record. Laguna Hills finished in 3:08.96, beating Walnut’s section record, set in the preliminaries last week, by more than two seconds.

Other top performers:

* Eric Diehl, who won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races as Mission Viejo finished second at the Southern Section Division 4-A swimming championships. Diehl broke Brian Goodell’s 4-A record in winning the 200 in 1:35.55.

* Tony Martinez, who had six hits in nine at-bats, including a home run, and drove in five runs in two Sunny Hills’ victories over Buena Park. Martinez batted .706 in the final two weeks of the regular season and broke the school single-season record with 42 hits.
