2-A

Grossmont 7, Valhalla 4--Sophomore first baseman Benny Craig became only the eighth player in section history to hit three home runs in a game, continuing his torrid playoff streak. Top-seeded and top-ranked Grossmont (27-1) got two other home runs by Paul Aceves and Matt Jones, and Greg Woodard hit two home runs for Valhalla (16-11). Craig now is six for six in two playoff games with six RBIs and five runs scored. Santana’s Jim Tatum is the only player with four homers in a game. The section record for consecutive hits is 10. Craig struck out in his final at-bat of the regular season.

Madison 9, St. Augustine 0--Jesus Martinez (3-1) pitched his best game all season, allowed three hits and picked up Madison’s first shutout of the season. Martinez also was two for five with three RBIs. Brian Delgado was three for four with two RBIs, and Mica Hale added a home run. St. Augustine finished 19-9. Madison will face Grossmont at 11 a.m. in Saturday’s semifinals at Grossmont College.

USDHS 5, Santana 4--USDHS rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh and will face Mission Bay for the fifth time this season in Saturday’s semifinals at 2 p.m. at Grossmont College. On a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the seventh, David Sanchez singled to right center to drive in the winning run. Earlier in the seventh, Aaron Blair had an RBI double and Mike Hull an RBI triple. The tying run scored on a two-out fielding error by Santana (17-7-1). Rob Floco (6-3) was the winner in relief.

Mission Bay 7, San Marcos 4--Mission Bay (21-8) scored five runs in the first inning, turned a strange triple play and upset second-seeded San Marcos, which lost for the first time in 16 games. After the Knights pulled within four runs and had the bases loaded in the third inning, a grounder to the Buc shortstop deflected off his shoulder to the second baseman, who stepped on second and threw to first. The first baseman then threw to third, nailing the San Marcos runner that had been on second, but not before the San Marcos runner on third had scored. Matt Lentz hit a two-run homer in the seventh for third-ranked San Marcos, which finished 21-4.
