SPORTSCOPE : Baseball Classic Will Showcase Area’s Top High School Seniors

The 22nd annual South Bay All-Star Baseball Classic will be played today at 7 p.m. at El Segundo Recreation Park. The game will feature the South Bay’s top 36 high school seniors.

Some of the players expected to compete include Banning pitcher Mike Busby, Torrance infielder Antone Williamson, Rolling Hills pitcher Kirt Kishita and South Torrance infielder David Rosato.

The red team will be coached by Bob Grand of South Torrance and Jeff Phillips of Torrance. The Blue team coaches are Narbonne’s Nick Van Lue and Rolling Hills’ Garry Poe.

Former El Segundo High standout Scott Talanoa, the designated hitter for Cal State Long Beach, was named a first team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

Talanoa hit 12 home runs for Cal State Long Beach, including one in the College World Series.

Loyola Marymount first baseman Joe Ciccarella and Pepperdine second baseman Steve Rodriguez were named to the second team. Talanoa and Pepperdine pitcher Patrick Ahearne, the former Harbor College standout, were named to the All-District VIII first team as well. Ciccarella and Lion relief pitcher Joe Caruso were named to the second team.

Rolling Hills High will sell its sports uniforms and sweats Saturday in the high school gym. Proceeds will be used to purchase equipment and uniforms for the new Peninsula High School.

There will be a presale at 8 a.m. for current Rolling Hills athletes, and the sale will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be overseen by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Athletic Boosters Club.

Mike Dodd of Manhattan Beach and Ricci Luyties of San Diego beat Brent Frohoff and Scott Ayakatubby of Hermosa Beach, 15-13, in the championship of a men’s pro volleyball tournament at San Antonio last weekend.

In the women’s tour, Lori Kotas and Gail Castro defeated Linda Carrillo and Liz Masakayan, 15-13, at Reno. Kotas and Castro won $11,200.

The men’s tour is in Boulder, Colo. this weekend and the women’s tour stops in Dallas.
