Kennedy’s Carter Joins Team for Shrine Game

Ontiwaun Carter, Kennedy High’s all-time leading rusher, has been added to the South team for the 40th Shrine all-star football game. Carter originally had been chosen as an alternate for the game, which is scheduled for July 27 at the Rose Bowl.

Carter, a two-time Times All-Valley selection, rushed for 4,274 yards in three seasons, including 1,521 last fall as a senior. He has committed to play next fall at Arizona.

Eric Vargas of Cal State Long Beach, a 1987 graduate of Burbank High, signed with the Texas Rangers on Thursday and will join the team’s Class-A affiliate in Butte, Mont., on Wednesday.

Vargas, a catcher, played for Valley College in 1988 and ’89 and was a spot starter on this season’s Long Beach team that advanced to the College World Series in Omaha.

Vargas, a 44th-round selection, will play for the Butte Copper Kings in the Pioneer League.

Jason Chandler of Burbank High was selected in the 49th round by the Kansas City Royals in this week’s amateur baseball draft. Chandler, who also has been recruited by Cal State Fullerton, will meet with the Royals before making a decision on his college plans.

The senior pitcher led Burbank to the Foothill League title with a 6-2 record and an 0.90 earned-run average. He had 79 strikeouts in 69 2/3 innings.

Kerrie Marshall of Moorpark College has committed to play basketball next school year at Augusta College in Georgia. Marshall, who played at El Camino Real High, averaged 19.5 points as a sophomore at Moorpark and was named the most valuable player of the Northern Division of the Western State Conference.

Teammate Amy Chandler, who averaged 15.5 points and was second in the state in assists, will walk on at Colorado.

Cal State Northridge nose guard Alo Sila has has been named a preseason first-team All-American by the 1991 NCAA Football Preview Magazine. Silo, 6-foot-1, 265 pounds, is from San Jose’s Overfelt High and San Jose City College. Last season as a junior, he made 28 solo tackles and 48 total.

He was second on the team in sacks with six for 53 yards in losses. Including sacks, he accounted for 73 yards in losses. Sila also intercepted a pass and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown.

Beth Welch, former Cal State Northridge setter, has been hired as an assistant volleyball coach at Cal Lutheran. Welch, who transferred to Northridge from Washington State, started at setter for the Matadors this season. She was the most valuable player in the 1990 Women’s Intercollegiate volleyball championships and competed in the Olympic Festival in 1989.

Welch is majoring in kinesiology at Northridge with an emphasis in teaching and coaching.

A baseball all-star game between seniors from Glendale-area and Burbank-area high schools will be played Sunday at Burroughs High at 7 p.m.

The Burbank team, which will be guided by Burbank Coach Dave Johnson and Burroughs Coach Terry Scott, includes Burroughs pitcher Mike Rossiter, who was selected in the second round of the amateur baseball draft Monday.

The Glendale team includes Crescenta Valley catcher Andy Saltsman, who set a school record with nine home runs this season. Jim Delzell of Hoover, Tony Zarrillo of Crescenta Valley and Rick Axelgard of Glendale will coach the team.

Victoria Herazo of Newhall finished 27th among about 120 competitors in the World Cup race-walking championship Saturday in San Jose.

Herazo, who turned 32 the day after the race, walked the 10-kilometer road course in 47 minutes 33 seconds and was second among U. S. competitors. Her time was the third-fastest of her career for a 10-kilometer road walk. Debbi Lawrence of Kenosha, Wis., was the top U.S. walker, finishing 15th in 46:13. The U. S. team finished sixth.

A baseball card convention will be held Sunday by the Conejo Recreation and Park District from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Thousand Oaks Teen Center. Former Dodger Willie Davis will sign autographs.

Andy Shaw, a first baseman from Montclair Prep, is among a group of 30 players being considered for one of 16 positions on the West team in the U. S. Olympic Festival.

Shaw, a left-handed-hitting senior, helped lead Montclair Prep to the Southern Section 1-A Division title last weekend.

Selections will be finalized June 14. The festival’s baseball competition will be played at USC on July 16-20.

The Woodland Hills Chamber of Commerce will serve as host to a Dodger Day during the Dodgers’ June 14 game against the St. Louis Cardinals to promote local attendence at Dodger Stadium.

Cal Lutheran center fielder Brenda Frafjord has been named third-team Academic All-American by college sports information directors nationwide.

Frafjord, a junior, hit .413 with 19 extra-base hits. She set a school record for home runs (three) at CLU’s home field and also led the team with a school-record 43 runs batted in. Her grade-point average was 3.39.

Frafjord was named to an Academic All-American team made up of players from NAIA and NCAA Division III schools. Earlier, she had been named a second-team NAIA All-American outfielder, making her the only CLU player to make an All-American and Academic All-American team in the same year.
