ORANGE COUNTY ALL-STAR VOLLEYBALL GAMES : Players of Year Compete Tonight at Golden West

Matt Taylor of Huntington Beach and Lara Carlsen of Corona del Mar lead the list of high school volleyball players competing in the Orange County all-star matches tonight at Golden West College.

The girls’ match starts at 6, followed by the boys at 7:30.

Taylor, The Times Orange County player of the year, will play for the North team. He was the Sunset League’s most valuable player and led the Oilers to their second league title in three seasons.

Huntington Beach’s Rocky Ciarelli, Newport Harbor’s Dan Glenn and Esperanza’s John Reid will coach the North team. Capistrano Valley’s Ken Goldstone and Laguna Beach’s Michael Soylular will coach the South.

Carlsen, The Times Orange County girls’ player of the year, will play for the North team. The middle blocker, who is headed to USC, led Corona del Mar to the State Division I title in December.

Former Corona del Mar Coach Dale Flickinger and Dennis Creighton of Marina will coach the North squad. Mike Jagd of El Toro and former Laguna Beach Coach Lance Stewart will coach the South.
