DIGEST : Richardson, St. Pierre Gain Honors

Camarillo High’s Laura Richardson and La Reina’s Michelle St. Pierre, sophomore pitchers who led their teams to Southern Section championships, were named divisional players of the year.

Richardson (16-3), the 5-A player of the year, shut out Buena, 3-0, in the final. St. Pierre (17-1), the 1-A player of the year, shut out Paraclete, 3-0, in the final.

In addition, Camarillo’s Darwin Tolzin and La Reina’s Don Hyatt were named coach of the year in the 5-A and 1-A divisions, respectively.

Other area players selected to the 5-A first team are Miki Mangan and Kelley Bannon from Camarillo, Lianne Ishikawa and Jenifer Henry from Buena and Nicole Ochoa from Thousand Oaks.

In the 4-A, Stacy Atwood of Crescenta Valley made the first team along with Jamie Dean and Heather Medearis of Hart and Jennifer Dalton of Glendale.

Two of the top four scorers on the Antelope Valley College women’s basketball team as well as two other former Marauder players have enrolled at Pierce for summer school and plan to play there next season, one of the players said Saturday.

According to Lulu Vasquez, the transfers also include Paula Page, Maria Vasquez and Rae Gentry. Lulu Vasquez and Page were members of last year’s Antelope Valley team and Maria Vasquez and Gentry played for the 1988-89 team.

Page, a 6-foot-1 freshman from Quartz Hill High, led Antelope Valley last season with averages of 17.1 points and 11.8 rebounds a game.

Lulu Vasquez, a 5-9 freshman from Rosamond, averaged 8.6 points. Maria Vasquez and Gentry are both 5-10 forwards.

Emilee Klein of Studio City shot a 10-over par 82 in Friday’s final round of the USF&G; Junior Classic at English Turn Golf & Country Club in New Orleans, finishing the tournament in second place, eight shots behind Julie Brand of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Klein finished the tournament at 305, 17 over par. Brand, who fired a two-over 74 Friday, finished at 297.

Klein and Brand entered the final round tied atop the leader board at 223.

Adam Divaro of Harvard High, whose team won the Southern Section 3-A Division volleyball title, has been selected the division player of the year.

Coley Kyman, a sophomore middle blocker on Cal State Northridge men’s volleyball team this season, is one of 18 finalists for the 12-member U. S. team that will play in the World University Games in Sheffield, England, July 14-25.

Kyman, an American Volleyball Coaches Assn. All-American, will play in the U. S. Olympic Festival in Los Angeles, July 17-21, if he is not selected to the World University Games team.

Fellow Northridge players Neil Coffman, Raphael Tulino and Ken Lynch have been selected to play in the Olympic Festival, which will be held at Loyola Marymount.

Coffman, an AVCA first-team All-American outside hitter, will play for the East team, which will be coached by Northridge Coach John Price.

Tulino, a middle blocker, will play for the North team, and outside hitter Lynch will play on the South squad.
