The honors keep pouring in for Rio Mesa High’s Dmitri Young, the unanimous choice Wednesday of the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles for Southern Section 4-A Division player of the year.

Young, a three-time All-Southern Section selection, batted .425 in his senior season with 34 hits, 11 home runs and 31 runs batted in. Young, who also was chosen state player of the year by Cal-Hi Sports magazine, was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the recent amateur draft, the fourth player taken overall. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound shortstop has signed a letter of intent to play at Miami, but it is likely that he will sign a major league contract.

Young was the only area player selected to the first team. Rio Mesa senior Mike Mitchell, a .457 hitter, was selected to the second team and two Hueneme players made the third team: junior pitcher Frank Adame, who posted a 10-2 record and 1.34 earned-run average, and senior outfielder Jose Reyes, who batted .402.
