A pair of second-year high school coaches were enlisted to lead the West team in today’s Bernie Milligan all-star baseball game at Cal State Northridge. Full of fire and enthusiasm, the two readily agreed.

Now look what’s in store.

The East team has won the annual affair the past five times. A young West coaching staff will seek to reverse the trend this afternoon beginning at 4:15.

“I guess we’re young and we don’t know any better,” said Chatsworth’s Tom Meusborn, who will coach the West along with Dan Maye of Royal.

The West, which trails in the series, 9-5, will take on an East team that includes three players from both Poly and Burbank. Burbank, champion of the Foothill League, is represented by Jason Chandler, Willie Rivera and Ozzie Areu. Jonathan Campbell, Marlon McKinney and Raul Torres represent Poly, which at one stage of the regular season was ranked No. 1 in the state.

The East is coached by Dave Johnson of Burbank and Bill Gordon of Van Nuys.

Seven East players, led by Chandler (6-2), Rivera (9-1), Torres (7-1) and Hart’s R. J. Simone (9-1), pitched extensively last season. The East also features Burroughs’ Mike Rossiter, The Times’ Valley pitcher of the year.

The West pitching staff is led by Simi Valley’s Brian Vasey, The Times’ Ventura County pitcher of the year, Mike Lee (Thousand Oaks) Cody Beaumaster (Kennedy), Sean Boldt (El Camino Real) and Bryan Martin (Granada Hills).
