Bryan Twins Advance to Semifinals

Twins Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo advanced to the semifinals of the Boys’ National clay court championships in the 14-and-under division at the Tennis Club of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., defeating the team of Tony Bicutta and Brandon Kramer, 6-3, 7-6, Wednesday.

Both players, however, lost in the fourth round of the singles competition. Mike lost to Bicutta, 6-1, 6-7, 7-6, and Bob lost to Mark Loughlin of Wisconsin, 6-4, 6-4.

Glendale High’s Kyiamowaki Jones, Albert Ocon and Hector Maya, who helped lead the Dynamiters to the Pacific League football title last fall, will play for the West team in an all-star football game at Citrus College on Friday at 8 p.m.

The 12th game is sponsored by the Pasadena-San Gabriel Valley chapter of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame.

Crescenta Valley’s Jason Shaiger and St. Francis’ Marty Konrad also will play for the West, which is coached by Mike Noonan of Cantwell. Baldwin Park’s Tony Zane will coach the East.

John Bracken of Northridge shot a pair of par-72s to win the two-day Oxnard golf championships at River Ridge Golf Course this week.

Camarillo’s Jay Grybowski and Dave Vanderhorse of Sepulveda finished four strokes back in a three-way tie for second with Mark Corley of Los Angeles.

Greg Evangelatos of Sherman Oaks, with the help of guide Kevin Anderson, won the 100-kilometer road race in the U.S. National Blind cycling championships at Long Island, N.Y., last weekend.

David Berganio Jr., of Sylmar defeated Mark Gilmartin of Reno, Nev., 4 and 2, in the first round of match play in the U.S. Amateur Public Links golf championships in Columbus, Ind.

Art Kahn, an infielder at Oak Park High, has been invited to play in the Barrier Reef baseball tournament in Australia by the World Sports American Stars Organization.

Westmont College Coach John Kirkgard will head the all-star team, which is composed of players from throughout the United States. The two-week trip begins July 28.

Kahn currently plays for Agoura-Oak Park’s American Legion team.

Gordon Davis of Encino advanced to the quarterfinals of the 64-player Men’s Hardcourt championships at Westlake Tennis & Swim Club, beating Jim Parker of Houston by default in the third round Wednesday. The event is sponsored by the U.S. Tennis Assn.

Davis, unseeded, will face seventh-seeded Ken Robinson of San Carlos, Calif.

The Friends of Conejo Golf, a group of parents and supporters of high school golf in the Conejo Valley, has committed to raise $10,000 to fund the programs next spring at Newbury Park, Westlake and Thousand Oaks highs.

The group’s charter was officially approved at a recent school board meeting, granting Friends of Conejo Golf official booster club status.

Golf was cut from the Conejo Valley Unified School District budget, forcing the teams to become self-sufficient economically.

The L.A. Shooting Stars, an all-star soccer team of 13- and 14-year-old girls from the San Fernando Valley, will play a series of matches in Nagoya and Kyoto, Japan during a two-week trip that begins Tuesday.

Paris Blumenthal of North Hollywood, who holds a fourth-degree black belt, placed third in the Amateur Athletic Union National Karate championships in Orlando, Fla., earlier this month.

The Chaminade High baseball camp, which features a trip to a Dodger and Angel game as part of the format, will be run in two sessions this summer.

The first session runs July 22-26, with the second from July 29-Aug. 2. The camp, which emphasizes hitting instruction and features a detailed written analysis at the end of the final session, is open to boys aged 9-17.
