OUTLOOK

Gone from the Vaquero roster because of graduation are quarterback Chris Singletary and tailback Ulysses Trammell, who led the county in rushing last season with 1,548 yards. But Miller thinks he has two speedsters among his 17 returning players who should handle those two spots more than adequately. One is Brown, an all-league receiver last year with 10.8 speed in the 100 meters who will move to quarterback--unless Miller can find someone else who can handle the job before the season starts--and the other is Byrd, a 2,000-yard rusher on the junior varsity team last year who played briefly on the varsity. Miller says he will help make Rancho’s backfield the best in the county. “(Byrd) should leave Rancho the leading career rusher,” Miller said. Vickers at fullback and tailback Randy Maldonado, a transfer from Pacifica, round up the ground attack. Cabral, Togia, Grizzle and Tolbert stabilize the defense. “We could be a factor (in the league race) if we don’t have injuries and if young players hold up,” Miller said.
