Palos Verdes Peninsula overwhelmed Corona del Mar, 17-1, in a nonleague girls’ tennis match Monday in Rolling Hills Estates.

Peninsula, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section Division 4-A, is in its first year of existence, but Palos Verdes, one of three schools that merged this summer because of declining enrollment, is the defending 4-A champion.

Lindsey Goldstein at No. 2 singles was the only player to win a set for Corona del Mar (1-1), which was ranked second in the preseason coaches’ poll.

“We expected to lose but not by this much,” Corona del Mar Coach Gary Salazar said. “We’re a strong team, but they had such a concentration of good players. We still expect to do well again this year.”

Last season, the Sea Kings, then the two-time defending Division 4-A champions, lost the division team championship to Palos Verdes.

In another girls’ tennis match:

Mater Dei 11, Edison 7--Erika Asmuss won each of her singles sets at love for visiting Mater Dei (2-0), which won all but one singles set. Asmuss has yet to lose a game this season.

In the Artesia girls’ volleyball tournament:

Los Alamitos 3, Cypress 1--Kelly Kuebler had 18 kills and Kirstin Laird had 36 assists for Los Alamitos in the championship match.
