Nevada Las Vegas scored the first three goals and went on to defeat host University of San Diego, 4-2, sending the Toreros (2-2) to their second consecutive loss. Sean Pinnell scored the Toreros’ first goal on an assist from Paul Gelvezon and Chugger Adair got the second on an assist from Toby Taitano.
Todd Curran scored on a breakaway 12 minutes into overtime to give UC San Diego a 2-1 victory over host Colorado College. Mike Alberts’ penalty kick in the first half gave the Toreros (3-2) their first goal.
San Diego State, by virtue of its 4-0 record and 1-0 victory over USD on Saturday, moved into the national rankings for the first time this season. The Aztecs are ranked No. 20 by Soccer America. USD, which was 15th, fell out of the top 20.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Loyola Marymount defeated San Diego State, 15-7, 5-15, 15-11, 15-10. Jennifer Wrightson and Gracie Schutt led the Aztecs (5-5) with 11 kills. LMU improved to 7-4.
Cal State Bakersfield defeated visiting UC San Diego, 15-6, 15-7, 15-10. UC San Diego dropped to 3-2. Bakersfield, ranked fourth in Division II, improved to 4-3.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Dave Johnson and Karen Jewel have been hired as assistant coaches at USD, Athletic Director Tom Iannacone announced.
Johnson, who comes to USD from UC San Diego, will assist Coach Gary Becker with the swim portion of the program. Jewel, a Patrick Henry High graduate who finished third in the 1984 section diving championships, will help the divers.
SAILING
British match racing skipper Eddie Warden Owen has joined New Zealand’s America’s Cup team as a coach.
Warden Owen, ranked fifth on the world match-racing ladder, has been given a leave of absence from Banks Sails in England to join the New Zealand campaign.
GOLF
Ray Knowles of La Jolla shot a 74 Tuesday and is three strokes back of the leaders in the second round of the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Crystal Downs Country Club in Frankfort, Mich. Knowles, who shot a 79 in the first round, is at 153. Clarence Moore of Winnsboro, S.C. and Morris Beecroft of Newport News, Va. lead at 150.
Joe Simpson of San Diego is at 160 and Bryan Conn of El Cajon is at 162.
