PREP ROUNDUP : Revenge Comes Quickly for the Mater Dei Girls’ Volleyball Team

Mater Dei, the fifth-ranked girls’ volleyball team in Orange County, defeated No. 2 Capistrano Valley in three games Tuesday, avenging a loss to the Cougars at the Orange County Championships last weekend.

Amy Moeller had 18 kills and Becky Gehlke had 15 for the visiting Monarchs (6-1), who won, 15-8, 15-11, 15-13. Capistrano Valley had defeated Mater Dei in three games at the Orange County Championships. Candi Ota had nine digs for Mater Dei.

In other nonleague girls’ volleyball:

El Modena 3, Edison 1--Melizza Benitez had 39 assists and Marni Hichborn had 15 kills and six blocks for the Vanguards (4-0) at Edison.

Mission Viejo 3, Laguna Hills 0--Kelly McGlothlin had nine kills and Jenny Allen had three aces for visiting Mission Viejo (3-1), which won, 15-8, 15-5, 15-4.

La Habra 3, La Mirada 0--Zrinka Kristich had 17 kills and Sandy Koehler had 11 blocks for visiting La Habra (5-2).

Laguna Beach 3, Woodbridge 0--Tori Scott had 21 kills and seven digs as host Laguna Beach (6-0) won, 15-7, 15-10, 15-7.

San Clemente 3, Santa Margarita 2--Lindsey Tanner had 15 kills and Dana Netherby had 11 for host San Clemente (2-2).

Western 3, Santa Ana Valley 1--Mindy Sheets had 13 kills and Thuy Tran had 12 as host Western (1-2) won, 15-5, 13-15, 18-16, 15-11.

In Sunset League girls’ volleyball:

Fountain Valley 3, Marina 2--Fountain Valley rallied from a 2-1 games deficit to win, 15-3, 13-15, 4-15, 15-11, 17-15.

In Sunset League girls’ tennis:

Marina 10, Fountain Valley 8--Thu Kocoa and Wendy Gratteau swept their doubles sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, and host Marina (5-1, 2-0) won all but one doubles set. Michelle Berkowitz swept in singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, for Fountain Valley (1-1 in league).

Westminster 11, Santa Ana 7--Westminster swept all nine doubles sets at Santa Ana, led by the No. 1 team of Jenelle Fletcher and Stella Tran, who won 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 Erica Guivas and Zina Tran swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3, and No. 3 Kathleen Chang and Eleanor Honda won, 6-0, 4-1 (default), 6-3. Susan Kim won two sets in No. 2 singles for the Lions (4-1-1, 1-0) against the Saints (0-1).

In Garden Grove League girls’ tennis:

La Quinta 13, Los Amigos 5--Lynn Wu swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles for host La Quinta (1-1, 1-0). Also sweeping for La Quinta were Quynh Nhu Nghiem at No. 2 singles, the team of Quynh On and Khanh Tong at No. 1 doubles, and the team of Janet Tham and Thanh Chiem at No. 2 doubles.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Brea-Olinda 11, Orange 7--Tammy Tillmon and Ruth Sanchez swept at No. 2 doubles for host Brea-Olinda (6-1). Brenda Beyronneau swept at No. 1 singles for Orange (1-2).

Buena Park 9, Cypress 9 (Buena Park wins on games, 80-76)--The Coyotes edged the Centurions behind sweeps from No. 1 singles player Katie Tu and No. 2 Cora Tu, who combined to lose only 12 games in six sets at Buena Park. Mary Beth Mallett and Shawna McKee swept in No. 2 doubles for Cypress (4-2).

Irvine 15, Edison 3--Milvia Schinaia swept in singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and the doubles teams of Gretchen Schmidt and Quynh Nguyen (6-4, 6-0, 6-3) and Traci Drayer and Jinna Uh (6-2, 6-1, 7-5) each swept their sets for visiting Irvine (3-0).

Laguna Beach 9, Newport Harbor 9 (Laguna Beach wins on games, 87-84)--Laguna Beach’s No. 2 doubles team of senior Shelby Hunt and freshman Kristy Collisson swept for the Artists (2-2).

Rosary 10, Katella 8--Joyce Cruz swept at No. 1 singles for host Rosary (4-2), 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, Tuesday at the Fullerton Tennis Center. Erin DiNunzio, a sophomore called up from junior varsity, teamed with Jennifer Chey to win two of three sets at No. 2 doubles for Rosary.

Western 9, Troy 9 (Teams tied, 80-80 on games, Western wins after Troy forfeits tiebreaker)--Although the teams split 160 games, host Troy (0-4) lost because several players left the match and were unavailable to play a full rotation of 12-point tiebreakers. Rhonda Lee swept at No. 1 singles for Western (2-3), 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, and the No. 1 doubles team of Erin Mahoney and Brenda Gravell also swept, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.

Woodbridge 10, Foothill 8--Anne Risquez and Huong Le swept at No. 1 doubles and Mandy Farboudmanesch and Amy Chen swept at No. 2 doubles for host Woodbridge (4-3).

Trabuco Hills 14, Orange Lutheran 4--Freshman Lori Wright swept her singles sets for visiting Orange Lutheran (2-2), but the Lancers were able to win only one more set. Trabuco Hills’ No. 2 doubles team of Mari Nakamura and Susannah Kapp won, 7-5, 6-4, 6-1, and the No. 3 doubles team of Amanda Moore and Kelly Stephenson won, 6-1, 6-4, 6-0, for the Mustangs (2-3).

In nonleague water polo:

Brea-Olinda 14, El Rancho 10--Scott Estrada had five goals and Scott Kling added three for visitng Brea-Olinda (3-1).

Laguna Hills 14, El Modena 9--Chad Carvin scored eight goals and Blake Corbin added two for the Hawks (3-3) at El Modena.

El Dorado 11, Millikan 7--Mikel Reta had five goals and Jason Gall added three for host El Dorado (3-0).

Esperanza 9, Mission Viejo 3--Craig Thomas had 10 saves and Brandon Martinez scored three goals for Esperanza (2-1) at Mission Viejo.

Fullerton 6, Riverside North 5--Adam Vick had 13 saves and Michael Emery and Matt Swan each scored two goals for Fullerton (4-3).

Laguna Beach 11, Servite 5--Tyler Rootlieb scored four of his five goals in the second half for host Laguna Beach (6-2).

Kennedy 19, Rancho Alamitos 11--Jason Pasol had 12 goals for the Irish (2-2, 1-0) at Golden West College.

San Clemente 12, Foothill 8--Jeremy Laster and Sean Lane each scored four goals for the Tritons (2-0), the No. 1-ranked team in the county.

Tustin 11, Long Beach Wilson 7--Jeremy Yorba scored five goals and Patrick Collins had four for Tustin (3-0) at Belmont Plaza. Mike Gonzalez had 16 saves for the Tillers.
