Jamal Farmer, a junior running back from Granada Hills High, quit the Hawaii football team Tuesday, citing differences with the coaching staff.

Farmer, who set an NCAA freshman record by scoring 18 touchdowns in 1989, rushed for 474 yards in five games this season. Farmer has rushed for 2,122 yards and scored 31 touchdowns in his college career.

Last season, Farmer (5-foot-10, 220 pounds) was suspended for three weeks after he missed two practices and blasted teammates for their play in back-to-back losses.

He finished the season with 664 yards rushing--a drop-off from the 986 yards he accumulated as a freshman.

Farmer, who helped Granada Hills win the 1987 City Section 4-A Division championship, indicated that he will remain in school.
