ROUNDUP : Aguirre, Padilla Set the Pace for Glendale

Obed Aguirre and Gracie Padilla of Glendale College swept the men’s and women’s individual titles in the Irvine cross-country invitational Friday.

Aguirre ran 20 minutes 4 seconds over the four-mile course at Irvine Park to lead Glendale to a fourth-place finish in the men’s team standings with 111 points.

El Camino placed five runners among the top 12 to win the team title with 29 points.

For Glendale, Robert Nelson finished eighth in 20:25 and Oscar Perez placed 13th in 20:41. The Vaqueros competed without defending state champion Hugo Allan Garcia, who was ailing.

Padilla timed 18:11 over the 5,000-meter course to lead the Vaquero women to a runner-up finish.

Norma Coronel finished ninth in 19:26, and Dolores Rivas placed 10th in 19:29 for Glendale, which totaled 122 points to Irvine Valley’s 82.

MEN’S SOCCER

Stanford 2, Cal State Northridge 1--John Alevras scored a goal with 20 minutes remaining to narrow Northridge’s deficit to 2-1, but the Matadors (6-3) could get no closer in the opening round of the Stanford tournament.

MEN’S TENNIS

West Coast Fall championships--Brian McPhie and David Ekerot, both of USC, won second-round matches at the Warner Center Club in Woodland Hills. McPhie defeated Ari Nathan of Pepperdine, 6-2, 6-3, and Ekerot defeated Mike Noel of Fresno State, 7-5, 6-1.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Redlands d. Cal Lutheran, 15-10, 15-4, 15-5--Jennifer Wylie, Cal Lutheran’s outside hitter, had seven kills and teammate Brenda Frafjord added five in the first match for the Kingsmen (5-7, 0-1) in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Moorpark d. Cate 15-6, 15-8, 16-14--Kristie Evans had a team-high 10 kills and Nicole Funfar added nine for host Moorpark in the nonleague match.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Valley 13, Ventura 7--Tim Fredericksen and Pat Karayan each scored four goals for Valley (10-3-3, 2-0) in a Western State Conference match at Valley. Ron Coleman scored three goals for Ventura (1-1 in conference play).

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Royal 11, Alhambra 8--Jack Kocur scored five goals and Luke Frazier added three to lead the defending champion Highlanders (7-3) to their second win in the San Luis Obispo tournament.
