Seal Leads Way to Irvine’s Victory, Trophy

Scott Seal scored a touchdown and rushed for 151 yards in 22 caries as Irvine High School defeated Woodbridge, 24-7, Friday night at Irvine stadium.

With the victory, Irvine (3-1) captured the Dennis Toohey Fencepost Trophy, which goes to the city football champion in Irvine.

Woodbridge (3-1) took the early lead when Glen Edwards ran 72 yards for a touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage.

But Irvine came back to tie the score, 7-7, when quarterback Jason Minici connected with Jon Peck for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1 minute 57 seconds left in the first quarter.

Seal’s one-yard touchdown run with 11:42 left in the second quarter gave Irvine a 13-7 lead.

The Irvine defense then accounted for the next score when Chris Esmond blocked a punt at the Woodbridge 20-yard line and lineman Tom Kilishek recovered the ball in the end zone.

Minici connected with Ryan Jones for a two-point conversion, which gave Irvine a 21-7 lead. The Vaqueros moved ahead, 24-7, when Dave Bilek kicked a 31-yard field goal with six seconds left in the first half.

The Warriors reached the Vaquero 25-yard line on two occasions in the second half, but Irvine turned them away both times.

Edwards finished the game with 108 yards in nine carries.

Minici completed nine of 17 passes for 142 yards and Warrior quarterback James Wyatt completed eight of 26 for 109 yards.
