TUSTIN — University High won its third consecutive game with a 17-7 nonleague victory over Foothill Friday at Northrup Field.
Running backs Jerry Apana and Sammy Hunt each scored a touchdown to lead the Trojans on offense. But it was the team’s defense that made the difference.
The Trojans sacked Foothill quarterback Tim Chaix four times, two by senior defensive end Nguyen Hang. They also limited the Knights to minus 21 yards rushing in the second half and no first downs.
Chaix completed two of 13 pass for 29 yards and was intercepted once by Chad Volousky. Chaix completed his second pass of the game early in the first quarter, and did not complete another until throwing a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
Foothill (1-3) finished with 71 yards total offense.
University (3-1) took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter when Apana caught a seven-yard pass from quarterback Chris Peake with 5 minutes 43 seconds left in the half. Nathan Morealle booted a 38-yard field goal with 5:57 left in the third quarter to give the Trojans a 10-0 lead.
In the fourth, Hunt scored on a three-yard run to make the score 17-0.
Foothill avoided a shutout when Chaix hit tight end Mike Urbanski with a 21-yard touchdown pass with 6:53 left in the game.
