Cal Lutheran Not Equipped for Loss to Sonoma St. : College football: Kingsmen’s gear arrives at airport late. Second-half interceptions help Cossacks win shortened game, 28-0.

The Cal Lutheran football team traveled a rough road to Sonoma State on Saturday.

The Kingsmen hit most of the bumps before the game even started, when their equipment, including some uniforms, was not placed on the same flight as the team and did not arrive until an hour after the originally scheduled 1:30 p.m. game time.

Cal Lutheran Coach Joe Harper was finally able to field a team in uniform at 3, after the coaches agreed to play a shortened game so the Kingsmen could make their 8 o’clock flight home. The game comprised two 12-minute quarters in the first half, a five-minute halftime, and two 15-minute quarters in the second half. It was sufficient time for Sonoma State to come away with a 28-0 victory.

The CLU defense created opportunities in the first half, recovering a fumble and intercepting three passes, but the Kingsmen (1-4) were unable to capitalize.

Sonoma State broke through with 1 minute 58 seconds left in the half on a one-yard run by Henry Milton. A 53-yard pass from John Spear to Anthony Hunter set up the touchdown.

CLU quarterback Adam Hacker left the game in the third period after being sacked by 285-pound tackle Corey Cheney-Rice and injuring the left shoulder that had troubled him earlier in the season. Hacker completed 7 of 19 passes for 92 yards.

Shortly after Hacker left, running back Donnie Norris took a seven-yard pass from second-string quarterback Donnie Walker for Sonoma State’s second touchdown.

Hacker’s replacement, Sheldon Ashkenazie, wasn’t as successful, and threw three interceptions, two of which were returned for Sonoma State’s final touchdowns.

Late in the third quarter, safety Orlando Henry intercepted an Ashkenazie pass and returned it 53 yards to bring the score to 21-0.

Ashkenazie threw another interception with 4:44 remaining and Barney Tuando returned it 33 yards.
