The Cal Lutheran men’s and women’s soccer teams faced tough challenges Saturday in the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, and while the men surrendered, the women held their ground.
The Cal Lutheran women prevailed, 2-1, in overtime at Cal Lutheran; the men lost, 1-0, at Claremont.
Cal Lutheran and Claremont are the best soccer schools in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and these meetings were the teams’ first of the season.
Since the top-rated Cal Lutheran men (6-2, 5-1 in SCIAC) and women (8-2, 6-0) are just above the Claremont men (8-2, 6-0) and women (5-3-1, 3-1-1) in the SCIAC rankings, the matches proved which was the dominant team--at least until they meet again later this season.
After a scoreless second half, Rachel Wackerman received a crossing pass from Danielle Deyarmond and headed in the winning goal for the CLU women five minutes into overtime.
Heidi Ramage scored five minutes into the match and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ Maril Davis retaliated seven minutes later, scoring on a penalty kick to tie the score, 1-1.
Claremont-Mudd’s Greg Treger scored 60 minutes 32 seconds into the men’s match.
