Dominguez Hills Women Play Chapman

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team will try to remain undefeated in California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play when it meets Chapman at 11 a.m. Saturday in Carson.

Dominguez Hills, No. 5 in NCAA Division II, dropped to 8-2-1 after a 2-1 overtime loss to Division I UC Irvine on Tuesday. The Toros are 2-0 in CCAA play. Chapman is 3-7 and 0-1.

Dominguez Hills’ junior forward Amy Rubin leads the conference in goals with 10 and is second in points with 24. With three goals last week, Rubin became the school’s all-time leader with 35.

Rubin also has 82 points in her career and needs 16 more to become the school’s all-time leader. Rubin’s twin sister, junior defender Anna, is the team’s second-leading scorer with 12 points.

Dominguez Hills will also play host Chapman in men’s soccer at 1 p.m. Saturday. Dominguez Hills is 5-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Chapman is 5-5-1 and 1-2.

The Toros have been led on offense by junior forward Gerardo Yepez, who has 14 points.

After winning three of its first four West Coast Conference matches at home, the Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team travels to Northern California for matches tonight and Saturday.

The Lions (11-7) will play the University of San Francisco at 7 tonight and Santa Clara at 7 p.m. Saturday. San Francisco is 4-9 overall and 0-2 in the WCC and Santa Clara is 11-6 and 1-1.

The Lions have been led by junior outside hitter Joli Eberhart, who is ranked ninth in the nation in digs and also leads the team in kills. Freshman setter Robin Ortgiesen, a former Mira Costa High standout, is ranked 13th in assists.

Two other integral players in Loyola’s lineup are sophomore outside hitter Deanna Doolittle and senior middle blocker Stacy Trapp, who became the first Lion to reach the 300-block plateau in her career with seven in victories over Portland and Gonzaga last week.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s volleyball team, winless in three California Collegiate Athletic Assn. matches, plays league opponent UC Riverside at 7:30 tonight in Carson.

Riverside is ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II with a 12-5 record and is 2-0 in the conference. The Highlanders are led by sophomore middle blocker Beth Cogan, who is third in the CCAA with a .375 kill percentage.

Dominguez Hills (12-14) lost in four games to Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday.

Sophomore outside hitter Gale Derricott leads the Toros with 278 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Evonne Caouette has a team-high of 32 blocks. Both are single-season records at the school.

More than 30 celebrities and tennis pros are expected to participate in the 14th annual Tracy Austin Pro-Celebrity Tennis Tournament at 9 a.m. Oct. 26 at the West End Tennis and Racquet Club in Torrance.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors and students 16 and younger. Proceeds go toward the South Bay Children’s Health Center in Torrance and Redondo Beach.

Registration is under way for a flag football program for boys and girls 6 to 13 that starts Monday at Darby, Rogers and Centinela parks in Inglewood.

The cost is $20 for Inglewood residents and $24 for non-residents. The program is sponsored by the Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department.
