Marchant Wright’s touchdown and George Sagen’s interceptions in the fourth quarter helped undefeated Los Alamitos record its fifth consecutive victory, 20-13 over Lakewood, before 3,500 Friday in a nonleague game at Lakewood High.

Wright’s 30-yard run and Bryan Kolasa’s extra point with 4 minutes 50 seconds left in the game broke a 13-13 tie.

Three plays after the ensuing kickoff, Sagen intercepted Lakewood quarterback Ray Domingo at the Los Alamitos 43 to ensure the victory. It was Sagen’s second interception of the game.

Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes said he was very surprised at the way Lakewood (1-4) played against his Griffins.

“This was a hard football game for us--Lakewood played good offensive football--but our big plays at the end showed we had character,” Barnes said.

Los Alamitos gained 379 total yards to Lakewood’s 224. Los Al quarterback Tim Carey completed 17 of 32 passes for 252 yards and was intercepted twice. He also completed a 17-yard pass to Don Ruberio for the Griffins’ first score of the night with 5:16 to play in the first quarter. The Griffins’ second score came on Jim Hocking’s five-yard run with 10:17 left in the second quarter. Los Alamitos gained 127 yards rushing on 24 carries.

Lakewood was led by Joe Nuez’s 55 yards on 15 carries. Domingo completed 10 of 22 passes for 126 yards and four interceptions and scored both touchdowns on runs of one and six yards.
