Larry Zucker, who helped establish the Southern Section’s corporate sponsorship program during the 1980s, was appointed associate athletic director for marketing and development at Cal State Fullerton, Titan Athletic Director Bill Shumard said Friday.

Zucker, 32, will also be executive director of the Titan Athletic Foundation. He replaces Walt Bowman, who resigned in August to become athletic director at Gordon College in Wenham, Mass.

The TAF executive director’s primary responsibility in the past has been fund-raising, but Shumard said the job’s focus will shift to more of a marketing position now that the Titan Sports Complex is nearing completion.

Zucker, who will assume his post Nov. 11, has spent the previous 2 1/2 years as the associate athletic director for fund-raising and marketing at Cal State Bakersfield.

“Larry was a pioneer in developing corporate sponsorships,” Shumard said in an athletic department release. “With the imminent utilization of our new sports complex, we see greater opportunities in marketing and advertising. Larry’s background and knowledge of the Southern California market fit our situation perfectly.”

A 1981 graduate of Redlands, Zucker last summer obtained a master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration from Cal Poly Pomona.

Between 1980-89, he helped establish the nation’s first high school corporate support foundation and helped raise more than $2 million for the Southern Section.

Zucker oversaw the Roadrunner Club at Bakersfield, and it showed fund-raising increases of 37% and 16% in his two full years. He also developed a facility sign program, which raised more than $20,000 for the school.
