David Dotson of Valley View High in Moreno Valley rushed for 507 yards against Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World Friday night, setting the CIF State single-game record.

Dotson, a senior, carried the ball 27 times and scored eight touchdowns in leading the Eagles to a 56-0 victory in a Southern Section Sunkist League game in Moreno Valley.

The previous record was 501 yards set by Ryan Knight of Riverside Rubidoux in a game against Corona in 1983.

The national record is 608 yards set by John Brunch of Elkins, Ark., in 1974. Dotson’s 507 yards is the sixth best in the nation.

Dotson, 5 feet 10 and 185 pounds, boosted his career total to 6,009 yards, also breaking the previous State record of 5,998 yards set by Russell White of Encino Crespi during 1986-88.

His eight touchdowns tied a Southern Section record set by Dave Johnson of Montebello Cantwell in 1969.

With Valley View leading, 56-0, Dotson was resting on the sideline in the fourth quarter. When Coach Leo Brouhard heard that Dotson was close to the record, he sent him back in with five minutes remaining.

The record was set on a 12-yard run that ended at Rim of the World’s 35-yard line with three minutes left.

“The offensive line blocked well, and that’s what happens when they do that,” Brouhard said.

Valley View, which has 2,000 students, opened three years ago. As a sophomore, Dotson rushed for 1,243 yards. Last season he had 2,498 yards, which led the Southern Section for the regular season.

For this season, Dotson has 2,286 yards in 199 carries and 32 touchdowns. Last week, he rushed for 445 yards in a 38-3 victory over Riverside Norte Vista.

The State single-season rushing record is 2,713 yards set by Glyn Milburn of Santa Monica in 1987.

Valley View is 6-0. Brouhard also coached Knight at Rubidoux.
