Cal Lutheran’s second win of the season was bittersweet.

While the scoreboard showed that the visiting Kingsmen were leading undefeated Occidental College, 12-0, Saturday, it also showed that 1 minute 47 seconds were left to play.

And 1:47 still remains on the clock. Officials called the game at that juncture when a fight broke out.

The Kingsmen (2-5) had driven to the Tiger 32 when a scuffle momentarily halted play. But when coaches and players from both sides continued trading words, the referees called the game.

“I’m a little disappointed they called it,” Occidental Coach Dale Widolff said. Widolff said he was disappointed that his team was deprived of a chance to regain possession and avoid the shutout.

That appeared an unlikely scenario, however, since Occidental (4-1) had gained just 94 yards in offense during the previous 58 minutes.

Cal Lutheran scored in the second quarter after defensive back Cory Undlin intercepted a Derrick Williams pass and returned the ball 14 yards to the Occidental 33. After Jay Weber ran for five yards on first down, tailback Cassidy O’Sullivan carried six consecutive times to set up quarterback David Harris’ three-yard scoring run.

O’Sullivan, who rushed for 134 yards, set a school record for most carries in a game with 33, exceeding Jay Weber’s year-old mark by one.

Kicker Tom Montague missed the point-after and the Kingsmen led, 6-0, with 8:01 left in the half.

Cal Lutheran scored its other touchdown late in the third quarter when O’Sullivan dove over from two yards. Harris’ conversion pass, intended for Tom Leogrande, fell incomplete and the Kingsmen led, 12-0, with 56 seconds remaining in the period.

Occidental never got its offense going. Williams, a scrambler, was effectively shut down by Cal Lutheran, completing just four of 10 passes for 18 yards before being replaced by Erik Messal in the second quarter.

Messal completed six of 16 for 51 yards and two interceptions.
