SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Personal Fouls End Cal Lutheran Win Over Occidental

Cal Lutheran defeated Occidental, 12-0, Saturday night at Occidental in a nonconference game that was stopped with 1:47 left because of personal fouls.

Cal Lutheran, which improved its record to 2-5, had driven to the Occidental 32 when a scuffle broke out. The referees called the game after coaches and players from both sides traded words across the field.

“I’m very disappointed that the game had to end on that note,” said Cal Lutheran Coach Joe Harper, whose team limited Occidental to 94 yards.

Occidental is 4-1.

La Verne 28, Menlo 7--Willie Reyna completed 21 of 32 passes for 377 yards and a touchdown to lead the Leopards in a nonconference victory at Menlo Park.

Reyna also ran for a touchdown for La Verne (5-1), which has won five consecutive games.

Freshman running back Phelan Piestrup gained 42 yards in nine carries and scored two touchdowns for the Leopards.

Wide receiver Rod Zerbel had eight receptions for 156 yards.

Menlo is 2-5.

Redlands 47, Whittier 18--Curt Landreth and Shawn Trejo each scored two touchdowns to lead Redlands to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Redlands.

Landreth gained 105 yards in 19 carries and Trejo added 95 yards in 14 carries for Redlands (4-1, 3-0 in the SCIAC), which built a 20-0 halftime lead and held Whittier (2-4, 1-2) to 48 yards rushing.

UC Santa Barbara 28, Azusa Pacific 7--Jon Barnes completed 15 of 30 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Gauchos to the nonconference victory at Azusa.

Amahl Thomas caught six passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns.

Azusa Pacific fell to 2-4.

San Diego 30, Claremont 3--Scott Sporrer gained 122 yards in 20 carries as the Toreros beat the Stags (0-6) in a nonconference game at Claremont.

San Diego (4-2) rushed for 247 yards and scored touchdowns on a 14-yard interception return and an 82-yard punt return.

Pomona-Pitzer 56, Principia 15--The Sagehens (2-5) outgained Principia (2-6), 322-43, en route to the nonconference victory at Claremont.

Tony Fadulu gained 91 yards and scored two touchdowns for Pomona-Pitzer.
