ROUNDUP : Wyoming Edges Northridge in Women’s Volleyball

In a match in which the tide turned several times, Wyoming rallied to win the final game of a five-set match and defeat Cal State Northridge in a women’s nonconference volleyball match before 426 Thursday night at Northridge.

Despite 17 kills by Northridge outside hitter Nancy Nichols, Wyoming scrambled to win, 15-8, 8-15, 15-8, 3-15, 15-10.

Northridge, which hit just .166 as a team, fell to 11-9.

Wyoming is 10-7.

Dawn Krenik had 12 kills for Northridge, and Jill Trehearne and Ana Kristich each added eight.

Joanna Jai Bruno had 15 kills for Wyoming and Tyree Leuthauser added 13.

Julie Peck also cracked double figures with 10 kills for Wyoming.

Northridge’s Patty Fitzsimmons was limited to two kills and Karen Scholl, another of the Matadors’ front-line standouts, failed to record a kill in 11 attempts.

Alison Wool had 43 assists for Northridge and Kim Smith had 45 for Wyoming.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Camarillo, 15-11, 15-10, 15-8--Jennifer Hamilton had 15 kills and Stacy Kaufmann added nine for visiting Royal (10-2 overall, 8-2 in league play ) in a Marmonte League match.

Camarillo fell to 3-7 in league play.

Agoura d. Simi Valley, 15-3, 15-8, 12-15, 15-5--Blair Thomas had four kills for Agoura (8-4, 7-3) in a Marmonte League match at Simi Valley.

Bell-Jeff d. Louisville, 15-7, 15-7, 15-6--Andy Ferchaw had 19 kills and Jani Despotov added seven for host Bell-Jeff (13-0, 5-0) in a San Fernando League match.

Louisville fell to 2-3 in league play.

Saugus d. Palmdale, 11-15, 15-10, 15-8, 15-9--Lindsay Estes had 15 kills and Kezban Yagmur added 12 for visiting Saugus (5-5, 4-2) in a Golden League match.

Notre Dame d. St. Paul, 15-8, 15-2, 15-5--Senior middle blocker Stefanie Hayes led host Notre Dame (6-6, 4-2) with eight kills, three blocks and three aces in a Mission League match.

Moorpark d. Oak Park, 15-9, 15-9, 15-5--Nicole Funfar had eight kills for Moorpark (12-0, 6-0) and Jessica Donaldson added seven in a Tri-Valley League match.

Kristine Butler had seven kills for host Oak Park (6-4, 3-3).

La Reina d. St. Bonaventure, 15-3, 15-8, 15-7--Amy Crotty had 11 kills and Shane Anderson added eight for host La Reina (10-2, 5-1) in a Tri-Valley League match.

Alhambra d. Hart, 11-15, 13-15, 15-5, 15-10, 15-12--Shannon Martin had 12 kills for Hart (3-6, 2-4), which could not hold off Alhambra in a Foothill League match at Hart.

L.A. Lutheran d. Ribet Academy, 15-11, 15-5, 10-15, 15-2--Deonna Olson had 10 kills and Anna Lopez added nine kills and four aces for L.A. Lutheran (9-2, 8-2) in a Heritage League match at Stonehurst Recreation Center in Sunland.

Birmingham d. Monroe, 1-15, 15-2, 15-8, 15-2--Tina Larson had 14 kills and four blocks and Emily Goodman had nine kills for Birmingham (7-4, 6-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Birmingham.

Monroe fell to 1-10, 1-7.

Montclair Prep d. Western Christian, 15-7, 12-15, 15-9, 15-8--Kendra Dousette had 24 kills and Dana Bennish added 13 for host Montclair Prep (6-3, 4-2) in an Alpha League match.

Sylmar d. Poly 7-15, 15-12, 15-4, 16-14--Araceli Rodriguez had 10 kills to lead host Sylmar (3-1 in conference play) in a Valley Pac-8 match.

Van Nuys d. Canoga Park, 15-11, 15-10, 15-11--Tami Cloninger had seven kills for host Van Nuys (7-1, 4-0) in a Valley Pac-8 conference match.

Ventura d. Hueneme, 15-11, 15-2, 15-8--Danielle Braun had 10 kills for Ventura (8-2) in a Channel League match at Ventura.

L.A. Baptist d. Village Christian, 15-4, 15-13, 15-4--Lucretia Haynes had seven kills and four aces for host L.A. Baptist (10-2, 6-0) in an Alpha League match.

Gina Aust added five aces for L.A. Baptist.

Westlake d. Thousand Oaks 15-10, 9-15, 15-13, 15-8--Tari Bentz, a senior outside hitter, led Westlake with a team-high 23 kills in a Marmonte League match at Thousand Oaks.

Stephanie Salm, a sophomore setter for Westlake, had 45 assists.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Camarillo 26, Newbury Park 29--Jeff Wilson of Newbury Park set another course record in a Marmonte League meet at Pepper Tree Park in Newbury Park.

Wilson, a senior and the defending state Division III champion, ran the three-mile course in 14 minutes 46 seconds to record his fifth course record of the season.

Mike Esparza of Newbury Park set the old Pepper Tree Park mark of 14:58 in 1986.

Birmingham 18, Monroe 38--Alvaro Mejia of Birmingham recorded the fastest time of the year among City Section runners in meets held at Pierce College, leading the Braves in a Valley Pac-8 Conference meet.

Mejia, a junior, ran the three-mile course in 15:40.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Chatsworth 4, Taft 3--Host Taft (7-1) lost its first Northwest Valley Conference match of the season.

Channel Islands 10, Newbury Park 8--Singles players Minh-ha Hoang, Kristin Lopez and Cecilia Cuenca each swept their singles matches for Channel Islands (5-9, 2-8) in a Marmonte League match.

Chaminade d. St. Paul, 18-0--Both No. 2 singles player Samantha Sargent and the doubles tandem of Heather Klein and Clarine Lim swept three matches without losing a game for Chaminade (11-3, 5-0) in a Mission League match.
