USD Doubles Team Picks Up Consolation Win

A University of San Diego’s women’s doubles team scored the lone victory for San Diego colleges Friday at the All-American Tennis Championships at Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades.
Julie McKeon teamed with Laura Richards in a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Brigham Young University’s Evica Kolganin and Sarah Mugnaina in the first round of consolation doubles.
In consolation singles, McKeon lost to Carla Cossa of Texas, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Her teammate Tuck Kacharoen lost in the same round to Stephanie Reece of Indiana, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
San Diego State’s Eva Olivarez lost to Texas’ Susan Gilchrest, 6-4, 6-2, also in the first round of consolation singles.
McKeon and Richards will play a duo from Duke today at 2 p.m.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Sparked by Karolyn Kaspar, Stephanie Riley and sophomore setter Pam Hope, San Diego State upset No. 18 Colorado State, 15-13, 15-2, 15-8, in a Western Athletic Conference match at Peterson Gym. SDSU, which will play 17th-ranked Wyoming tonight, improved to 11-11, 3-2. The Rams fell to 16-6, 2-3. Gracie Schutt had 16 kills for the Aztecs.
Jennifer Lofftus had 14 kills, Andrea Bruns 11 and Nikki Wallace 10 to lead the University of San Diego to an 11-15, 15-11, 15-5, 15-8 West Coast Conference victory over visiting San Francisco (5-12, 1-5). USD improved to 13-10, 3-4.
UC San Diego swept Cal State San Bernardino, 15-12, 15-10, 15-11, in a nonconference match at UCSD (21-5). Heather Holtzclaw led the Tritons with nine kills and a .571 hitting percentage. Elizabeth Tan added 13 kills for UCSD, the top-ranked Division III school.
CSSB fell to 14-19.
Point Loma Nazarene fell in five games to Azusa Pacific in a Golden State Athletic Conference match at PLNC. Azusa Pacific, ranked seventh in NAIA District 3, defeated the Crusaders, 15-9, 13-15, 15-10, 11-15, 15-11.
The Crusaders, who host third-ranked Fresno Pacific tonight, were led by Robin Rabello’s 29 kills. Teammate Aurora Van Sickle added 20.
PLNC fell to 12-14 overall, 5-8 in District 3, 2-7 in GSAC. Azusa Pacific improved to 25-6, 11-1, 8-1.
POWER BOATS
The final races of the Pacific Power Boat Club and the American Power Boat Assn.-hosted season begin today and end Sunday on Mission Bay near Ski Beach. The fastest boats in the country, including several San Diego entrants, will chase season-high points.
Local competitors include El Cajon’s Kevin Aylesworth, who will race in a 2.5 stock hydroplane. He was fourth at the APVA inboard National Championship races.
WATER POLO
Top-ranked Cal handed UCSD a 11-6 defeat at Canyonview Pool. Gary Seelhorst’s three goals led the Tritons (13-10), ranked 11th in the NCAA Open division.
