They rarely draw attention, and then only when they make mistakes, but for 1991, offensive linemen dominate The Times’ Southeast All-Star High School Football Team.

Pulling, trapping and blocking in a world of dirt and grass, there were so many good offensive linemen this past fall that no tight end was chosen for the all-star team to allow another slot for these essential players.

Linemen in the Southeast, in general, are not big. But what they lack in size, they more than make up for with speed, quickness and headiness. In an area where teams live and die with ball control offenses like the wing-T, half a dozen blockers often lead the way for each ballcarrier.

Fourteen schools are represented on the all-star team, led by Valley Christian of Cerritos and El Rancho of Pico Rivera with three each.

The offensive player of the year is lineman Danny Cervantes of Schurr High in Montebello. The defensive player of the year is back Albert Sethman, a two-time all-Southeast selection from Whittier. Wing-T expert Dick Shelko, who guided El Rancho to its second consecutive Whitmont League title, was named coach of the year.

The team members will be honored at a breakfast at 9 a.m. Jan. 12 at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel.

The all-Southeast team, selected through a poll of coaches:

OFFENSE

Damon Hicklin, Downey, wide receiver--An all-purpose player, he accounted for nine touchdowns. The 6-foot, 175-pound senior averaged 23.1 yards a catch and scored three times on receptions, rushed 40 times for 255 yards and two scores, averaged 38.1 yards on kickoff returns and 28 yards on punt returns. He returned three kickoffs and one punt for touchdowns. He also played defensive back.

Vince Wilson, Santa Fe, wide receiver--A two-way starter who also played cornerback on defense, he had 47 receptions and seven touchdowns, despite being double- and triple-teamed on almost every play. Defensively, he had 37 solo tackles, four interceptions and recovered two fumbles.

Jose Bernal, Bell Gardens, lineman--A 6-foot, 257-pound junior who has started 22 consecutive games for the Lancers, mostly at center. “He is our best lineman . . . the best center we have had here in 15 years,” Coach Dave Newell said.

Dong Koo, Warren, lineman--The 6-foot-4, 280-pound senior would like to attend USC but also is considering three other major colleges. An imposing force on the line, he is the team’s largest lineman. “He has desire, a good work ethic and a great attitude,” Coach Jim Neal said.

Danny Cervantes, Schurr, lineman--The Foothill League lineman of the year played both offensive and defensive tackle. At 6-foot-2, 260 pounds he “dominated just about everyone he played against,” Coach Tom Davis said. He often led sweeps and surprised opponents with his quickness.

Adrian Corona, El Rancho, lineman--”I don’t think he ever came off the field,” said Coach Dick Shelko about the 5-foot-9, 183-pound senior, who also played linebacker on defense. He led the team in tackles, and was a co-captain.

Adrian Flores, Montebello, lineman--The 6-foot, 270-pound right guard, according to Coach Doug Rihn, “isn’t tall, but has always been big. This year he got himself into shape, worked real hard in the weight room and on his running, endurance and mobility.” A consistent blocker who excels in one-on-one situations.

Eric Sands, Glenn, center--He is intelligent, intuitive and willing to do “whatever the coaches asked him to do,” according to Coach Willie Norman. Carries a grade-point average of 3.8 and is considering an engineering degree at Columbia. “We definitely had the better center in the (Suburban) League,” Norman said of the 6-foot-2, 235-pound senior.

Johnny Macon, Downey, quarterback--The 5-foot-11, 175-pound multipurpose back netted 513 yards rushing and passed for 632 yards. A junior, he was named the offensive player of the year in the San Gabriel Valley League.

Chris Loera, El Rancho, back--”You cannot measure his heart and desire,” Shelko said. Although he is only 5-foot-6 and weighs only 138 pounds, the senior fullback rushed for 1,083 yards and eight touchdowns, and caught 13 passes for 114 yards.

Corey Peters, Valley Christian, back--Voted the most valuable running back in the Olympic League. The 5-foot-8, 180-pound senior tailback rushed for 1,890 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was a bruising runner. “He was tough to bring down because he had so much lower body strength,” Coach Mike Wunderley said.

DEFENSE

Anthony Casados, La Mirada, lineman--A 6-foot, 195-pound senior nose guard and tackle, he was the most valuable lineman of the Suburban League. “A hard-nose football player,” Coach John Mele said.

Tom Moncayo, El Rancho, lineman--In only his first year as a starting defensive lineman, the 6-foot, 233-pound senior batted down five passes, forced four fumbles and sacked opposing quarterbacks five times. He made 50 solo tackles and was in on 48 others. He also played offensive tackle and guard. “He has been the player we have run behind on crucial downs,” Shelko said.

Jake Wiersma, Valley Christian, lineman--The 6-foot-5, 250-pound tackle blocked four place kicks and had seven sacks, and was second on the team in tackles. He also played offensive tackle, where he was “the anchor of our offensive line,” according to Wunderley.

Cesar Magana, Bell Gardens, lineman--At 5-foot-10, 190-pounds, the junior tackle led the Lancers with 31 solo tackles and 86 assists. He is a two-time all-Whitmont League selection.

Aaron Plante, Valley Christian, linebacker--He led the Crusaders with more than 100 tackles. As a fullback, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound senior rushed for nine touchdowns and was a key blocker for the Olympic League champions.

Bobby Barnard, Pioneer Baptist, linebacker--One of the few players from eight-man football ever to make the all-Southeast team, the 6-foot-3, 260-pound senior has the physical size to be a factor in college. When he missed one game with an injury, “we looked real bad. Everyone was looking for him to stop the other team,” Coach Manuel Cortez said.

Claudio Millan, Schurr, linebacker--”He seemed to have a knack for getting to the ballcarrier,” Davis said. The 6-foot, 190-pound senior had four interceptions and led the Spartans in tackles. He also played running back and gained nearly 1,000 yards.

Fernando Loza, Huntington Park, linebacker--A two-way starter, the 5-foot-10, 230-pound senior averaged six unassisted tackles each game. The team captain was best at stopping the run, and was a better-than-average blocking guard on offense. “He has been a leader on the field for our program for three years,” Coach Dwight Muskrath said.

Albert Sethman, Whittier, back--A returning player to the all-star team, the 6-foot, 187-pound senior was named the most valuable defensive and offensive back in the Whitmont League. He had 42 solo tackles and was in on 63 others. He forced four fumbles and intercepted two passes. Sethman rushed for 1,000 yards in a little over six games as a running back. “He is always around the ball,” Coach Mike Fitch said.

Adrian Fernandez, Huntington Park, back--The 5-foot-10, 230-pound strong safety also played running back where he gained 1,200 yards in total offense. He had three interceptions, including a key theft that sealed a victory over Locke, and earned the Spartans the Eastern League title of the CIF City Section.

Jimmy Hutchinson, La Mirada, back--He was a co-captain with Casados. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound senior was “always around the ball,” according to Mele. Hutchinson led the team in interceptions.

Matt Lenzen, St. Paul, kicker--He finished second in the Southern Section kicking statistics, averaging 43.3 yards a punt. In 11 games at quarterback, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound senior, who was team captain, threw only two interceptions. Lenzen is listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students for his academic and athletic achievements, as well as for volunteer work in the community and in charities. He also plays volleyball and basketball.
