If Campbell Hall High found itself in a foul mood last weekend, imagine how Faith Baptist and Harvard-Westlake highs felt last month. There were 42 fouls in Campbell Hall’s 76-71 loss to Crossroads last Saturday, but that pales in comparison to the whistle-blowing that took place when Faith Baptist played Harvard for the championship of the Faith Baptist tournament.

An ear-splitting 52 fouls were called, 26 per side. There is, however, a possible explanation. “We had three refs working that game,” Faith Baptist Coach Stuart Mason said.

Free throws: In Royal’s 65-55 upset of Westlake last Wednesday, the Highlanders were 21 for 33 from the line. Westlake was four for eight. . . .

Crescenta Valley’s Eddie Molina has made 18 of 19 (94.7%) free throws. Teammate Josh Willis has made 81 of 96 (84.4%). The Falcons are shooting 73.9% (227 of 307).

Scoring: Canyon’s Joe Ferguson has scored in double figures in every one of the Cowboys’ 15 games. Ferguson is averaging 18.1 points a game. . . . Burroughs’ Phil Hernandez has scored in double figures in 10 consecutive games and is averaging 15 points a game. Hernandez has hit 93 of 186 shots (50%) from the field. . . .

Providence junior Barry Dabbaghian has scored 188 points over his past seven games, an average of 26.9 points. . . . Five St. Francis players have averaged between 6.7 and 9.8 points a game, but none higher than that.

Three-point shooting: Crespi off-guard Rob Leff has made 41 of 96 attempts (42.7%) from three-point range and has attempted an average of 7.5 a game. Leff, a 6-foot-4 senior, is averaging 20.0 points. . . .

Eric Pryor of Oak Park is 24 for 49 from three-point range (48.9%) and teammate Damian Delfino is 15 for 29 (51.7%). . . .

Westlake is 63 for 126 (50%) from three-point range. The Warriors made only 38 three-point baskets last season. Jasen Nielsen leads the team with 16 in 35 attempts (45.7%) and Chris Hayden is 15 for 37 (40.5%).

Rebounds: Westlake’s Brad Schwan (12.3) and Joey Leavitt (9.3) combine for 65% of the Warriors’ per-game average of 33.

Streaks: Home teams won nine of 12 Marmonte League basketball games last week. “It’s tough when you go on the road in this league,” Channel Islands Coach Gary Abraham said. Abraham should know. The Raiders play four of their first five league games on the road and 13 of their first 14 games are away from home.

Assists: Simi Valley point guard Ryan Briggs had 22 assists in two games last week, including 12 in a 74-48 win over Royal on Friday. Briggs’ 12 assists tied the fifth-highest single-game mark in school history.

Steals: In L.A. Baptist’s first 12 games, four Knight players had 27 or more steals. Brad Imbler led with 35, much to the amazement of Coach Maury Neville. “This team has more steals in preseason than any of my 17 other teams,” Neville said. “I don’t know why. If you came out to practice 10 years ago and now, you wouldn’t see me doing anything different.”

Overtime: Calabasas’ 5-8 record just as easily could be 8-5. The Coyotes have played four overtime games this season, losing three. Including two playoff games last season, five of Calabasas’ past 15 games have gone into overtime. Said Coach Bill Bellatty: “I’d coached in probably 200 games before and had maybe three overtime games.”

Girls’ soccer: Simi Valley (13-1) has outscored opponents by a lopsided 39-3 count and has 11 shutouts. . . Charlee Bell, a junior striker at Nordhoff, has scored 10 goals in eight games and is on pace to break Janna Morrison’s single-season school record of 18. . . .

Alemany senior fullback Maureen O’Hare is the team’s leading playmaker with six assists. Alemany has gotten off to a 12-4-1 start by outscoring opponents, 26-14. The Indians, who allowed nine goals in a pair of losses, have 11 shutouts.
