Cheers for a Lesson in Sportsmanship

Last Friday night at the Mater Dei basketball game with Santa Margarita High School at UCI’s Bren Center, the CIF Division I championship football team was saluted before the game. My heart was warmed by the reception given to the Mater Dei team by the Santa Margarita fans. Although rivals, the Santa Margarita following joined the Mater Dei supporters in giving the Mater Dei football team a standing ovation.

This kind of sportsmanship that transcends friendly rivalries is what high school athletics should be all about. The fans of Santa Margarita High School should be commended for making it a truly special moment for our championship team.
